Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners selected to design LSE’s New Global Centre for the Social Sciences
LSE Global Centre for the Social Sciences Competition Winners
The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has chosen Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP) to design its new £90m Global Centre for Social Sciences (GCSS).

They were selected as the winner from five architect teams shortlisted via an architectural competition organised by LSE with the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects). The teams were:
• Grafton Architects, Ireland
• Heneghan Peng, Ireland
• Hopkins Architects, UK
• OMA, The Netherlands
• Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, UK
The brief for the new Centre called for world-class architecture which matches LSE’s international academic reputation. The brief also specified the need to demolish and redevelop of a number of existing buildings on Houghton Street and Clare Market on the School’s Aldwych campus.

Professor Craig Calhoun, Director of the LSE, chaired the Jury Panel which made the final decision after presentations from the five shortlisted teams. He commented: “From an extremely strong field of submissions, LSE has chosen Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners to create a new structure at the heart of our campus. They have designed beautiful, dynamic buildings around the world and they offered an elegant, thoughtful submission to this competition. RSHP grasped that this would be a building at once for the university and for the city, an enhancement to public as well as academic space. My colleagues and I are delighted that the RSHP team will now work with us to complete the design and add to the excitement of our terrific London location.”
Director of Estates and Jury Panel Member Julian Robinson said: “Each of the five proposals gave us pause for thought with innovative design responses. We intend this to be a seminal piece of university architecture so it was important we took time to get the decision right. The RSHP proposal goes beyond the School’s brief by giving us a new public square in the heart of the campus. We are looking forward to developing the designs with the RSHP team and are confident that the result will produce a highly sustainable and outstanding piece of architecture.”

Ivan Harbour, Senior Partner leading the project at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, said “We are excited to be working with the LSE and we look forward to an open dialogue with the school, so that together we can create the best environment possible for the university and its students. Our new addition to the campus will enrich the urban context and reflect the essence of the LSE.”
As part of the decision making process, a public exhibition was held where LSE staff, students and visitors were able to vote for their favourite design from the shortlist. This vote was taken into consideration by the School’s jury panel when they met. Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners won the public vote by an overwhelming margin.

Design Exhibition: 7 – 18 Oct in the LSE Library
The London School of Economics (LSE) has revealed designs from the five architects shortlisted for its next major building project; the £90m Global Centre for Social Sciences (GCSS). This international competition, run in conjunction with the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects), follows the School’s new Students’ Centre which is nearing completion where architects O’Donnell Tuomey were also selected via an RIBA competition in 2009.

Designs from five world renowned architectural practices have been submitted to the School for judging. The shortlisted firms in alphabetical order are as follows:

(Note, Steven Holl Architects, USA, no longer appears in this list of 5 – they pulled out before the start of the second stage, as they got two large jobs in the USA at the same time as being shortlisted for LSE and felt they didn’t have the time to commit to this big competition project too.)

Involving the demolition and redevelopment of a number of existing buildings on its Aldwych campus, the brief for the GCSS calls for world class architecture so that its estate is comparable with its international academic reputation.
As part of the decision making process, a public exhibition of the five schemes is being held in the LSE Library from 7–18 October. Staff, students and visitors are able to vote for their favourite scheme – although the identity of each architect is anonymous. Julian Robinson, LSE’s Director of Estates said:
“We believe we do design competitions well; mid-term design workshops with each of the teams helped to ensure they understood the brief and didn’t waste time and effort on tangential issues. The LSE does not have easy projects and always sets tough design challenges, as a result the amount of analysis and intellectual effort that has gone into the designs is staggering. The teams have done a remarkable job in the time available”.
“This will be the School’s biggest ever building project and will transform the heart of our campus. Given its scale it will be a landmark building and its legacy will endure for many generations of LSE students so it is vital that we make the right decision.”
In late October the teams will make a presentation to a Jury Panel chaired by Professor Craig Calhoun, Director of the LSE, with an announcement on the winning team due from the School in early November.

25 July 2013 – RIBA Competitions is delighted to announce that six teams have now been selected to take part in the design stage of the competition for The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) to design their New Global Centre for the Social Sciences.
This new building (project value circa £90m) will have a vital role to play in cementing the LSE’s position as a world renowned educational establishment and will become a place that inspires existing LSE students and will help attract new high calibre students and staff to the School.

Julian Robinson, Director of Estates for the LSE commented: “What a shortlist! The next stage in our plan to create a world class campus has just taken another significant step forward. The Global Centre for Social Sciences attracted a wealth of architectural talent from across the globe. I and my fellow jury panel members, which included our own in-house guru, Ricky Burdett had a difficult job but surprisingly there was a high degree of unanimity amongst us when the final selections were made. If the New Students’ Centre design competition (won by O’Donnell Tuomey) is anything to go by we are in for a real treat when the proposals from the shortlisted six are presented in October.”
The shortlisted teams will now have until September to work on their design submissions with final interviews/presentations due to be held in October 2013.

Expressions of interest are invited from architect-led design teams with exceptional design skills for the London School of Economics and Political Sciences (LSE) New Global Centre for the Social Sciences.
The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is the world’s leading centre for social sciences. Founded in 1895, the LSE is one of the largest colleges within the University of London and has an outstanding reputation for academic excellence nationally and internationally. This is an unusual UK university; few university institutions in the world are as international. The study of social, economic and political problems covers not only the United Kingdom and other countries within the European Union but also countries of every continent.
The LSE is committed to procuring the highest quality architecture and has a strategic aim of creating a ‘world class’ estate, commensurate with its international academic standing and competitive with other world class HEI’s.
The next step in the campus development programme is to further improve the School’s teaching, research and support facilities through the complete redevelopment of the centre of its Aldwych campus. The new building that will be constructed will have a vital role to play in cementing the LSE’s position as a world renowned educational establishment and will become a place that inspires existing LSE students and will help attract new high calibre students and staff to the School.
The design of the new building provides the opportunity to encompass new types of spaces for creative research, social learning and intellectual collaboration, which will be flexible and able to accommodate evolving academic practice.
The competition will follow a two stage process, inviting expressions of interest at stage one. A shortlist of up to six will be selected and invited to produce concept designs. Each shortlisted team will receive an honorarium payment of £10,000 (+ VAT). The assessment team will include architect Andy MacFee from Proctor and Matthews acting as the RIBA Adviser and the School’s Professor of Urban Studies Ricky Burdett.
