Building News Update - Dalian International Conference Center 16 Jul 2009 Construction images © COOP HIMMELB(L)AU English text: Construction is speeding up on the seafront site for the Dalian International Conference Center, as the ambitious target is to host the annual "Summer Davos" Summit in September 2010. The 120,000 square meter project comprises a state of the art conference center for up to 7,000 visitors as well as an opera house for 1,600 guests. After winning the international competition by September last year the groundbreaking ceremony took place in November followed by the structural works for the basement as well as the 30,000 ton steel construction by just April 2009. Steel construction is scheduled to be finished by the end of September this year. Nach dem Gewinn des internationalen Wettbewerbs im September letzten Jahres, fand die Grundsteinlegung im November statt, gefolgt von der Finalisierung der Rohbauarbeiten des Fundaments sowie einer 30.000 Tonnen Stahlkonstruktion im April 2009. COOP HIMMELB(L)AU reveals details on their second project in China image : ISOCHROM.com (Vienna, January 30, 2009) The Dalian International Conference Center in Shenzen, China has just broken ground in attendance of Mayor Xia Deren last November. COOP HIMMELB(L)AU had been selected as winner of the invited competition in August 2008 out of entries by Zaha Hadid Architects or gmp von Gerkan, Marg und Partner amongst others. The International Conference Center is located in Dalian, an important seaport, industrial, trade and tourism center, located in the southernmost part of the Liaodong Peninsula in the Chinese Liaoning Province. The project combines on overall 100,000 sqm a number of different functions within one hybrid building: a Conference Center, an Opera House, an Exhibition Center as well as a basement with parking, delivery and disposal. Wolf D. Prix, Design Principal of COOP HIMMELB(L)AU describes the concept of the Dalian International Conference Center as “an idea to create a “small city” composed of conference- and performance-rooms under a single shell-like roof. Located in the center there is a large, for 1,800 visitors’ laid-out theater respectively opera house with stage areas and a flexible conference room for 2,500 persons. Middle size and small conference rooms will be arranged like pearls around this core. Herewith, roofed streets and plazas emerge in between the halls enhancing informal communication.” On the subject of the building’s energy concept Wolf D. Prix explains: “At all times we have implemented concepts that reduce consumption of resources in our projects. Also our building in Dalian was planned upon sustainable principles; for example an elaborate climate concept that comprises the usage of seawater for cooling will generate a 30% energy saving respectively carbon dioxide reduction.” The design for the Dalian International Conference Center creates a focal point, an instantly recognizable landmark in Dalian at the terminal point of the future extension of the main city axis.
