MEMORY

The architecture of the new Distribution Centre of “Farmacias Ahumada· looks for solutions for the distribution and handling of pharmaceutical products, incorporating the latest operational technologies and Bioclimate.

It is a simple, categorical and simple architecture in harmony with the natural environment. The building is located in the periphery of the city of Santiago, in a new urban area in development.

Alternate sets of windows give movement to façade and also show different readings of the corporative image of the company. During the day, the building looks like a closed metallic body with drawings of slight horizontal windows which at night become lines of light, floating in darkness. Windows eliminate perception of confinement, improving labour quality.

A container of low transmission coefficient for wrapping was designed to achieve saving and rational use of the energetic and technical resources, to improve life quality and environmental protection. A skin formed of several elements performing different functions keeps protected from solar energy and takes out hot air in a thermosiphon way, to let back isolation to carry out its functions in a very efficient way.

During winter and summer earth is used as a thermic conditioner and through fans ( the only mechanical elements) air is introduced into underground pipes where it is conditioned in a natural way and then introduced into the areas, pressurizing them with renovation channels equivalent to one volume per hour. Depressurization is also achieved by natural means, through holes in the opposite facade.

The introduction of BIOCLIMATE into the indoor areas is architecturally expressed by means of brilliant pipes arising from earth. Materials used in the buildings, namely steel, concrete and glass intend more durability and less maintenance. A natural zenithal lighting system is carefully designed to obtain suitable light levels helping to the energetic saving of the building. Such environment quality results in high productivity and satisfaction levels of the employees. In other words, a responsible architecture.

Ecological features

The first bioclimatic project in Chile ( country with a deep energy crisis and high levels of pollution), using geothermic for the conditioning of different areas. Passive technologies making use of natural weather conditions (wind, solar radiation). An excellent quality of life for personnel has been achieved (250 people) with average temperatures of 18º-24ºC indoors all year round. Only natural zenithal lighting is used with the maximum energy saving and environment protection.
