Saving the old Prentice Women’s Hospital in Streeterville
Preservation groups are fighting to get the building landmark status.
Five winners of the Pritzker Architecture Prize are among a group of 10 architects who have joined the campaign to save old Prentice Women’s Hospital, reported the Chicago Tribune yesterday.

A coalition of preservation groups has asked the Commission on Chicago Landmarks to put the issue on the agenda of its Thursday meeting.
The Commission on Chicago Landmarks has not addressed the issue for more than a year.
The Prentice Women’s Hospital building was designed by Bertrand Goldberg, a Chicago architect best known for the world-famous Marina City (aka Corn on the Cob towers).
The building has been largely empty since a new women’s hospital opened on Northwestern University’s medical campus, and the school wants the site for a research facility.
Preservationists have produced a study saying the former hospital could be renovated. The university has a study saying renovation isn’t feasible.
The circular towers, arranged in a four-leaf clover pattern, are cantilevered out from a supporting core. Patients’ rooms center on their nurses’ and doctors’ stations.
The Pritzker winners – two from Switzerland and one each from Japan, Portugal and the USA – and the five others join 60 prominent architects who earlier pleaded for Prentice to be spared in a letter to Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who has yet to take a position.
A report from the National Trust for Historic Preservation described Prentice as “distinctive in appearance”.
Bertrand Goldberg studied at the Bauhaus in Germany. The architect worked with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in Germany and, after returning to Chicago, studied structural engineering.
In the 1950s, he designed Marina City, a pioneering effort to revitalize downtown with a complex of apartments, shops and recreational facilities.
