The William Gates Building is the University of Cambridge Computer
Facultys new home now that it has outgrown its city centre accommodation,
and includes research, teaching, library and catering facilities for
300 students.
Within the building, the more public teaching areas are
separated from the research space by a three-storey street
with connecting galleries and bridges for informal circulation and
meetings.

Judges comment: The activities of the Computer Faculty are clearly
demonstrated through the careful organisation of the building to create
a complex conceived with simplicity and underplayed grandeur...The
brief called for a building sensitive to its energy use and sustainability,
and it has achieved this.
The Computer Laboratory is the first building completed in the West
Cambridge Master Plan, west of Clerk Maxwell Road.
