The William Gates Building is the University of Cambridge Computer Faculty’s new home now that it has outgrown its city centre accommodation, and includes research, teaching, library and catering facilities for 300 students.

Within the building, the more ‘public ’ teaching areas are separated from the research space by a three-storey ‘street’ with connecting galleries and bridges for informal circulation and meetings.

Judges comment: “The activities of the Computer Faculty are clearly demonstrated through the careful organisation of the building to create a complex conceived with simplicity and underplayed grandeur...The brief called for a building sensitive to its energy use and sustainability, and it has achieved this.”

The Computer Laboratory is the first building completed in the West Cambridge Master Plan, west of Clerk Maxwell Road.
