Contemporary Bulgarian Property

Located in a small mountain village, now a quarter of Sofia, the house is a simple volume floating over the steep triangular plot and a space intended as a martial arts training hall hidden in the slope.

The plan is organized between the two solid walls, the veranda, the intermediate space of the stair and the small courtyard/opening in the centre. A suspended hand-woven wooden sticks wattle unifies the external and the internal spaces, serving both as cladding on the blind walls and shading in front of the glazing.

Bulgarian Architecture News

Bistrica House is one of three Mies Van Der Rohe 2009 Award nominated projects by I/O architects

The other two properties are:

Liulin Apartment Building in Sofia
The new building is on the boundary between two periods and between the city and nature. It completes the complex, gives it a new face and stares at the iconic view of Vitosha Mountain.

Panorama Apartments Building in Burgas
This high-density structure is located on a busy street between the town and the seaside park. A system of horizontal stripes of reflective screens gives passers-by the opportunity to take a glimpse of the sea just behind the trees.

Sofia Multifunctional Complex
Taking the circle – the symbol of round table democracy – as the starting point, the three primary functions of the buildings (European Union Agency, Knowledge Centre, and Exhibition Centre) were then expressed. The circle then evolved during the design process to take the form of a curved triangle, accommodating each of these different building types and responding to the natural contours of the site at the edge of the mountains.

The concept of the building has two points of departure: analysis of its location and analysis of its function. In order to analyze the location we set off to it from Sveta Nedelia Square and along Al. Stamboliyski Blvd.

Black Sea Gardens Bulgaria by Foster + Partners
A series of car free hill towns in an unspoilt setting of oak forests, meadows and river gorges, the development will create a year-round community for up to 15,400 residents.
