Bridge Architecture : Architectural Structures

Major Crossing Projects from around the world

Architecture of Bridges

We've selected what we feel are the key examples of Bridge Architecture. We aim to include buildings that are either of top quality or interesting, or ideally both.

We cover completed bridges, new crossing designs, architectural exhibitions and architecture competitions across the world. The focus is on contemporary bridges but information on traditional bridges is also welcome.

We have 4 pages of Bridge Design selections with links to hundreds of individual project pages.

Grand Canal Bridge, Venice
Design: Santiago Calatrava
Quarto Ponte sul Canal Grande Venice
www.palladium.de, Barbara Burg/Oliver Schuh

The first bridge to be built across Venice's Grand Canal in almost 75 years. Designed by architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava, the bridge will take its place up-stream from the famed Rialto Bridge, the first bridge to span the Grand Canal. Calatrava's bridge, which was commissioned by the Municipality of Venice through a public selection process in 1999, is sited at an extremely strategic point, connecting the railway station (Stazione Santa Lucia) on the north side of the Grand Canal with the Piazzale Roma on the south. The Grand Canal bridge will be important both functionally and symbolically, not only will it connect rail travelers more directly to the city, but it will also welcome visitors to Venice with a panoramic view of the Grand Canal.

Infinity Bridge, UK
Design: Expedition Engineering

The brief called for an iconic structure as part of the Stockton-on-Tees regeneration of the North Shore site. The resulting footbridge now links the north and south shores and provides better access to business and jobs in the area. Designed by Expedition Engineering, the slender bowstring bridge cuts a distinctive silhouette across the River Tees. A 230m-long concrete walkway is supported by a pair of asymmetric steel arches that appear to skip across the river like a pebble skimming water.

Designed by the Queensland division of Australia's Cox Rayner Architects with Arup, the £35.5 million pedestrian and cycle bridge connects Brisbane's Central Business District with the city's South Bank and its major cultural precinct. This is the second project the two practices have collaborated on in the last decade following the completion of the Goodwill Bridge in 2000. Both bridges are part of a comprehensive process by the Queensland Government to interconnect two of the city's major precincts.
