VOLUME
Stanton Williams
For the last 20 years, Stanton Williams have quietly carved a path
that makes no reference to objects, styles, or concepts, and this
protects them from the crisis now facing the architectural imagination,
caught between a seemingly insatiable appetite for difference and
a desire for more lasting significance. Irénée Scalbert

Volume is that rare thing-a book about architecture and design that
is also an accessible treatise about people, buildings, art, and craft,
mixing thoughts with imagery, text with design. The book is a journey
through the work and world view of Stanton Williams that takes the
reader from interviews to project details by way of elegant design
and specially commissioned photography.
The book begins with an essay by critic and historian Irénée
Scalbert establishing their work within its cultural and historical
context. A conversation between Alan Stanton and Paul Williams introduces
the reader to themes which include, at their core, the power that
exhibition design and a passion for materials, space and light has
to form the backbone of a pervasive ethos, practice and built catalogue.
The exhibition director Ken Arnold follows with an essay on the
creation of spaces for art, touching on Stanton Williams' designs
in this field. Architectural and design critic Stephen Bayley concludes
the book with his own take on the practice's work and ethos.
