Great Houses of Scotland Scottish Lighthouses ![]() Sharma Krauskopf £10.39 2001, Paperback 93 pp, Appletree Press; ISBN: 0862818036 General description Scotland boasts a landscape of stunning coastlines and awe-inspiring islands. With some of the most dangerous coastal waters in the world, however, such breathtaking scenery comes at a price. Lighthouses have, therefore, played a significant part in the history of this country, which is so heavily dependent on the sea for its livelihood. "Scottish Lighthouses" is a beautifully illustrated and insightful tour of 31 magnficent lights, built over the last two centuries to protect ships from the perilous coastline. Because Scotland has led the way in maintaining lighthouse stations, most of the buildings described here are, happily, still both functional and in excellent condition. Sharma Krauskopf is the author of "Scotland: The Complete Guide" (Appletree Press), and is a regular contributor to "Lighthouse Digest" magazine. She and her husband own Eshaness Lighthouse on the Shetland Islands. Scottish Lighthouses The Lighthouse Stevensons: The Extraordinary Story of the Building of the Scottish Lighthouses by the Ancestors of Robert Louis Stevenson ![]() Bella Bathurst £7.82 2000, Paperback 304 pp, Perennial (HarperCollins) ISBN: 0060932260 Online Review It is well-known that Robert Louis Stevenson wrote Treasure Island, Kidnapped and other children's classics. Few will know the details of his family background and yet in their own way a the "Lighthouse Stevensons" were also remarkable men. Against great odds these men designed and arranged for the building of the network of lighthouses around the dangerous and inhospitable Scottish coast. They were typical of the Victorian age-when no obstacle seemed too great to overcome, despite the limited technology available at the time. The book is full of interesting facts and anecdotes. For example, we are told about the "wreckers"-islanders who gained from shipwrecks and were opposed to the erecting of lighthouses. The characters are well drawn and the style of writing is very reader-friendly. It is a good read for both the general reader and for anyone with an interest the Victorian age, in heroic feats of engineering and/or in the writer, Robert Louis Stevenson.
