The building has 14,400m2 destined for offices, research and development areas such as the white-room and the prototypes workshop, and social spaces. Bilbao Arena Idom UK photo : Jorge Allende Bilbao Arena - 2 Jul 2012 RIBA Awards 2012 Winner This 20,000 seat professional basketball stadium and community sports centre is perched on a grassy outcrop, its veil of green painted steel ‘leaves’ hanging five metres beyond the world-class basketball arena inside. This creates an exterior service zone (like the branches of a tree) for the building’s gloriously accessible array of air-handling equipment. Basque Health Department Headquarters Bilbao COLL-BARREU ARQUITECTOS photo : Aleix Bagué Basque Health Department Headquarters The new Basque Health Department headquarters is located at the last site that still remained unbuilt on the administrative and Business Center of Bilbao. Up to now, the institution was suffering the spread of its staff in several buildings, hardly recognizable by citizens, away from each other and uncomfortable for both users and technical services. The aim of the new building is bringing together staff in a recognizable place, in order to increase the efficiency of the service and identify easily the corporation. The project at the same time involves both economic and property profits. La Peña Multi-Sport Pavilion, north east Spain COLL-BARREU ARQUITECTOS photo : Aleix Bagué La Peña Multi-Sport Pavilion La Peña is one of the areas that suffered more from Bilbao’s post-industrial restructuring. For most of the twentieth century, the area was an open pit mining surrounded by dwellings for workers. The city keeps its shape of a narrow and curve bank between an open cast mining and a natural abrupt slope hillside, profoundly affected by the industrialization. The sport complex must support the social transformation of the zone and it is actually the only public facility of the neighborhood.
