Communications Tower, Montjuic / Torre
de Comunicacions, Montjuïc
Hill of Montjuic, southwest Barcelona
1991
Santiago Calatrava, Architect
Description:
The Montjuïc Tower is 136m high and very stylised like many Calatrava
buildings. It could be read as a piece of sculpture carved from pure white
marble, or as half a dough-ring speared by a bloated toothpick. There
is a resemblance to the Skylon once built in London but without the paired-down
panache. This is a show-off building designed to be seen from all over
Barcelona to symbolise the power of the Olympic Games coming to Catalonia.
Admirers of architect Santiago Calatrava will no doubt enjoy its bonelike
scultping and poetic expression but since I first saw it in 1991 my view
remains cool.
