Kensington Oval is a cricket ground made up of individual stands, not a stadium bowl. Although replacing over 80% of the existing stands, the new development seeks to maintain this important distinction.

Further, each stand has a very unique character; the new stands seek to retain the positive attributes of the one they replace. The final scheme retains the character of the ground, whilst creating a stunning vibrant new facility.

The 13,500 seat permanent capacity was temporarily increased to 27,500 – 30,000 seats during finals. This is achieved by phased integrated development of the ground and the use of temporary seating systems.

In addition to the ground development, the redevelopment acts as a key urban catalyst for the surrounding areas of Bridgetown.

The stands of the Kensington Oval were extensively rebuilt for the 2007 Cricket World Cup in a BDS$90M (US$45 Million) redevelopment. Demolition of the old stadium began on schedule in June, 2005 after completion of the first Test against Pakistan.

The names of the former stands which made up the Kensington stadium were the George Challenor stand, the Hall and Griffith, the Kensington, the Mitchie Hewitt, the Pickwick, and the Three Ws stand plus the Peter Short Media Centre. Most of these names have been retained.
