e-architect editor Adrian Welch commented on the Stirling Prize 2010:
“This year's Stirling Prize seems like a two-horse race this year between Chipperfield and Hadid. Having been to see both of their nominated buildings the choice appears pretty straightforward: between subtle restraint and flamboyant expressionism. In other words each building pretty much represents their designer, they are not atypical.
As an architecture student my initial impression of Chipperfield was a reaction to his Rowing Museum. This restrained wooden-clad building was scrutinised by us students. My initial impression of Hadid was seeing her intriguing paintings, her fire station and designs for Hong Kong and Germany and her amazing rings at the Edinburgh Winterschool!
Clearly these are two major architects with very different approaches to architecture. Of course the rest of the Stirling Prize shortlist is not without distinction, but many factors – such as the importance of the client bodies (major institutions in major capital cities) weighs heavily.
I was disappointed not to see Caruso St John’s Nottingham building included but they appear to be a practice in the ascendant so hopefully another year”.
The odds for Zaha to be the Stirling Prize winner have shortened since last posted (24 Sep, scroll down) with Chipperfield lengthened slightly and the others drifting out of contention:

Stirling Prize 2010 Shortlist - View
View re the Stirling Prize Shortlist from e-architect editor Adrian Welch:
"The Neues Museum was the clear favourite even before the Stirling shortlist announcement but now Zaha Hadid's MAXXI is tipped to win. Not appearing in the shortlist are the British Embassy in Warsaw and the Nottingham Contemporary in England - a real surprise. Last year Tony Fretton's Fuglsang Kunstmuseum was favourite for the Stirling Prize but didn't win so his Embassy not making the cut wil come as a blow. Caruso St John's Nottingham Contemporary has been widely praised and is this respected studio's largest project to date. However the more humble pair of school projects and house do add width to the list and will make it harder for the Stirling Prize judges to compare buildings".
On 22 Jul the Stirling Prize shortlist was announced. The RIBA Stirling Prize 2010 is the UK’s most prestigious architecture prize. Now in its fifteenth year, the RIBA Stirling Prize is awarded to the architects of the best new European building ‘built or designed in Britain’. The Stirling Prize will be presented at The Roundhouse, London on 2 Oct 2010 and broadcast live on BBC 2’s The Culture Show where architecture critic and The Culture Show presenter Tom Dyckhoff will present films about the buildings shortlisted form the Stirling Prize 2010.

Stirling Prize - RIBA Comment
Ruth Reed, RIBA President, said:
“The RIBA Stirling Prize celebrates architectural excellence and this year we have a remarkable group of buildings on the shortlist. Unique in the history of the RIBA Stirling Prize, three major museum buildings make up half of the list, showing us three very different ways of building - and re-building - museums and galleries. They are the fruits of the economic boom of the last decade and sadly may represent the end of an era.
“This is also the first year that two schools have been shortlisted for the prize. They represent what all schools should be: light, well-laid-out and well-equipped environments in which all students can flourish. Investment in well designed schools demonstrates to teachers and pupils how much they are valued and has measurable impact – attendance and results rise; truancy and bullying fall. With the programme to improve our extremely poor school estate now much reduced – it could be some time before we see such exemplar school buildings on the Stirling shortlist again.
“A commercial/private building by a young practice - a boundary-pushing take on the future of mixed-use buildings - completes the shortlist. It is one of three projects by practices that have never been shortlisted before. I look forward to the debate with my fellow judges about which project is the worthiest winner, and announcing the result in October.”

The winner of the UK’s most prestigious architecture prize will be announced live as part of a special edition of The Culture Show presented by Kevin McCloud from The Roundhouse, London. Ruth Reed, RIBA President said: “This is the eleventh year the RIBA Stirling Prize will be broadcast on national television, and we are delighted this year to be joining forces with the BBC. Comment re Shortlisted Buildings + Architects
Favourites Tony Fretton Architects have never been shortlisted for the Stirling Prize before but are well known for considered, subtle projects. Their British Embassy in Warsaw has just completed and is a step up in scale from earlier projects, such as the Lisson Gallery in London. Tony Fretton's key projects in my view are his powerful Chelsea house and restrained Faith house in Dorset.
Despite its humble scale the London Maggie's Centre brings great comfort and help to those suffering from cancer. Whilst I firmly believe the state should be providing this quality of health provision and building I fully support Maggie's Centres for not only filling the void with sensitive support but for commissioning a series of really good architects. This building has obvious quality - simple articulated forms, red-coloured rendered walls providing warmth and solidity. it is one of an increasingly long list of Maggies Centres by celebrated architects. The Client is surely due a special award.
Previous Stirling Prize controversies have included whether a bridge should win an 'Architecture Prize' (the Gateshead Bridge went on to win in 2002) and in 2009 there have been rumblings about a 'shopping centre' being shortlisted. The Liverpool ONE masterplan is a welcome addition in that it is not a stand-alone building, nor private - it is used by thousands of people every hour and my feedback tells me it is well-liked by the people of Liverpool. The project is instrumental in making the city centre work and is a major and successful intervention that eschews look-at-me styling.
The Times describes the 2009 Stirling Prize shortlist as "more subdued than in recent years". Tony Chapman, RIBA head of awards, said re the Stirling shortlist: “It is possibly quieter than in some years [but] we would call this a pretty vintage year.”
BD's Ellis Woodman boldly states "Kentish Town Health Centre and the Fuglsang Kunstmuseum are surely the only real contenders", describing Bodegas Protos as "just a big roof" and maintaining some of the Liverpool One buildings are "grisly".
