The Greenland Group Suzhou Center is designed to address poor air quality in Wujiang, incorporating a 30-storey tall operable window in the tower’s atrium, which invites cool air flow during summer months from the seasonal prevailing winds, and floods the interior spaces with natural light.

The “lung” of the building is designed to facilitate mixed mode ventilation in the lobbies and public spaces, providing a fresh air supply source. The building is also expected to achieve 60 percent savings in energy consumption compared to a conventional high rise.

The tower has been designed for a prominent location along Taihu lake in the Jiangsu Province of China. The mixed-use tower includes office, residential, retail and hotel uses.

The project was selected as the Overall Winner by an independent panel of expert judges, who noted that the project demonstrates “a confident control of form and the mix of uses within. It demonstrates skilful integration within a stimulating and efficient strategy”.

In addition, ‘Sanskriti’ a drawing board project in Jaipur, India by Sanjay Puri for the Arg Group received the Commended Award in the Tall Buildings category.

The MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards uniquely celebrate un-built or incomplete design projects, and are intended to showcase fine architecture and creativity, and the response to the client development brief. The awards are well established as the main platform for celebrating exemplar architecture at the annual MIPIM property market in Cannes.

10th Annual MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards Winners

Brazil’s Girrasol Building named Overall Winner of the MIPIM AR Future Project Awards

Isay Weinfeld’s São Paolo project also wins Residential gong in prestigious competition

London, 6th February 2012 - A distinctive residential block formed by unevenly cascading levels situated on a sloping topography in São Paulo, has been named the Overall Winner in the 10th annual MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards.

Girrasol Building - Overall Winner of the MIPIM AR Future Project Awards in 2012:
Girrasol Building

The project, which also won in the Residential Category, was selected by a panel of expert judges from among 143 entries submitted from all over the world as the overall winner of the competition.

Designed by Isay Weinfeld for Idea!Zarvos, the Girrasol Building is located on the edge of Vila Madalena, a suburb of São Paolo. The building is situated between two streets with a 19 meter displacement between them, and is designed to sit harmoniously within the area’s sloping topography.

The unevenly cascading levels of the building are designed to follow the existing contour of the terrain, resulting in several configurations of floor plans and layouts suitable for a variety of different living options, each offering unimpeded views of the west side of the city.

The Judges said that the Girrasol Building stood out “as an example of seemingly effortless architecture which nevertheless deals with a series of difficult universal issues. The result sings.'

Three other projects were Commended by the judges in the Residential category, including Cambridge Greens at Ramanujan IT City, Chennai, India by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill; Royal Road affordable housing, South East London by panter hudspith architects; and Wafra Living complex, Kuwait by AGi Architects.

The MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards, which mark their 10th anniversary this year, have this year named ten project winners across ten categories, with projects hailing from China, Turkey, Abu Dhabi, Brazil, Czech Republic, Poland and Denmark. Turkey was the most successful country this year, with no less than four winning projects all located in Istanbul, while Abu Dhabi saw two successful projects in the competition. A further 14 projects were awarded a “Highly Commended” prize.

The awards programme uniquely focuses on building designs for projects awaiting construction or still on the drawing board, celebrating exemplar architectural design and impressive responses to the client brief. The awards now form the centrepiece architecture event during the annual MIPIM conference and exhibition.

The judging panel was chaired by Paul Finch, Editorial Director of The Architectural Review; Roger Zogolovitch, Director AZ Urban Studios; Peter Stewart, Peter Stewart Consultancy; and Sutherland Lyall, author and critic.

Paul Finch, the director of the MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards, said, “It’s been another great year for the awards, and some very impressive high quality projects have been submitted. It’s interesting that this year no less than four of the winning projects are intended for Istanbul, and two for Abu Dhabi. It certainly seems to be the year of the Middle East in 2012. Our overall winner is also a very impressive and imaginative residential scheme intended for a young and bohemian suburb of São Paolo. However, UK projects have also fared very well in this Olympic year, with three great commendations for projects in London.”

- Awards Celebrate the World’s Most Innovative Architectural Designs

Architects from across the globe have been invited to enter their latest projects into the 10th annual MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards programme, which uniquely celebrates innovative thinking and approaches to design for building concepts or projects yet to be built.

The prestigious awards form a centrepiece event for showcasing exemplar architectural design and robust responses to the client brief, and will take place during the MIPIM commercial property market in Cannes next March.

The awards include nine separate categories, eight of which are open to entry, with the ‘Overall Winner’ prize awarded during the ceremony. Previous winners have included the Musheireb - Doha, Qatar designed by Mossessian & Partners; Jean Nouvel designed ‘One New Change’ in the City of London; and Isay Weinfeld Arquitetura’s 360º Building in Brazil.

Eight award categories are available for entry, they include:

• Big Urban Projects
• Regeneration and Masterplanning
• Tall Buildings
• Mixed Use
• Offices
• Residential
• Retail and Leisure
• Retrofit

The Retrofit category, new for the awards in 2012, will celebrate the best creative re-use of a building which demonstrates significant energy and environmental improvement. This new category reflects the increasing demand for designs that adhere to the low-carbon agenda and prolong the active life of existing buildings and infrastructure.

An additional Sustainability prize will be awarded to one project entered in any of the above categories. This category cannot be entered separately.

The deadline for entry is 23rd November 2011. An international jury, chaired by Paul Finch, will be announced shortly.

Paul Finch, the director of the MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards, said, “The Future Project Awards attracts a stellar selection of the highest quality architectural projects from around the world. Not only do the awards consistently identify projects which subsequently go on to be both realized and critically praised, but they also help to raise the profile of some of the field’s most innovative thinkers and designers.

The MIPIM AR Future Project Awards are truly international, with the most recent winning projects hailing from UAE, Italy, Qatar, France, UK, and China.

2011’s winning practices included Mossessian & Partners, Terry Farrell & Partners, Pangalos Dugasse Feldmann Architectes, Denton Corker Marshall and Arup Associates.

Jeremy Thompson, International Director, TENGBOM and 2011 MIPIM Future Project Awards winners, said: “Our win has certainly gained recognition for Tengboms hard working team and our local China partners United Design Group. The scheme has gone on to win a further China National prize for innovation in town planning within Jiangzu Province.”

The Awards will be presented during a special celebratory dinner held in Cannes at the Palais Stéphanie on 7th March 2012 during the market, an event that has become the hot ticket evening for architects at MIPIM.

There will also be a permanent exhibition of all entrants on display on the London Stand, and all winning and commended schemes will be published in the official catalogue which is distributed to all registered MIPIM delegates.

mossessian & partners “Heart of Doha” Awarded Overall and Mixed Use Prizes
In the MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards

Project creates contemporary vernacular architecture using traditional spatial hierarchies

London, 1st February 2011 – mossessian & partners’ vision for a major urban placemaking project designed to encourage residents back to the centre of Doha, Qatar has been named as both the Mixed Use and Overall Winner in the ninth annual MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards.

The 48,865 m2 ‘Musheireb – Heart of Doha’ scheme for developer DOHALAND comprises nine residential, office and retail buildings orientated around a central square.

Designed to reverse the trend for decentralisation in the city, the scheme draws heavily on the Qatari architectural legacy with its traditional spatial hierarchies such as the majlis and internal courtyards.

mossessian & partners’ design solution also includes highly adapted passive strategies for thermal comfort against the ambient conditions of Doha, incorporating deep shade created by tall narrow streets and density, deep roof overhangs and layers of decorative screens. Marking a new benchmark for sustainable architecture in the Gulf region, the scheme is targeting LEED Gold efficiency.

The judges applauded the scheme for the significant attempt to create “a contemporary vernacular architecture in the Gulf. Public space is combined with extensive shading and its scale relates to everyday life”.

Marking a hat trick of awards celebrating architecture in the Middle East, Denton Corker Marshall won this year’s Tall Buildings award for Cluster Complex in Dubai, a 75 level, 111,500 sq m office tower composed of four separate shafts, each with several individual office buildings clustered vertically up a 255 m high atrium. A 27 storey hotel and 21 storey apartment tower are adjacent. The judges said, “The striking and variegated forms would be in marked contrast to the general run of Dubai’s buildings. The complex as a whole embraces the idea of a mixed use neighbourhood into which this tall building seamlessly plugs.”

The ninth annual international awards competition has named a total of seven project winners across eight categories selected from the hundreds of entries received, with winning projects hailing from Qatar, China, USA, UK, Dubai, Italy and France. An additional seventeen projects have been awarded a “Highly Commended” prize by the panel of judges.

The prestigious awards programme uniquely celebrates innovative thinking and approaches to design for buildings either still on the architect’s table or yet to be built, and forms the centrepiece event at the annual MIPIM property market for showcasing exemplar architectural design and robust responses to the client brief.

The judging panel was chaired by Paul Finch, Editorial Director of The Architectural Review; Roger Zogolovitch, Director AZ Urban Studios; Peter Stewart, Peter Stewart Consultancy; and Sutherland Lyall, author and critic.

MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards - Summary

Paul Finch, chair of the judging panel, comments, "We've seen another year of excellent schemes submitted from all over the world, including some that genuinely innovate in their design. Our Overall Winner is arguably on one of the most difficult development sites in Europe, and yet has managed to create a new view of St Paul's while adding a more contemporary element to the area, while our Sustainability winner has demonstrated how low energy design features can pioneer new architectural forms. However, all of our winners have been recognised for their pioneering and innovative approaches by our panel of judges."

The MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards competition was established nine years ago to raise the bar for good quality design in the built environment, and unusually the competition was open to projects either on the drawing board or under construction. The Awards are open to Developers, funders, architects, contractors and others who can demonstrate their involvement in the submission.

The Awards will be presented during a special celebratory dinner held in Cannes on 17 Mar 2010 during the MIPIM market, an event that has become one of the hot ticket evenings of MIPIM week. There will also be a permanent exhibition of all entrants on display on the London Stand, and all winning and commended schemes will be published in the official catalogue which is distributed to all registered MIPIM delegates.
