BUCHAN GROUP CLEANS UP AWARDS AT HOME AND ABROAD

Australian design expertise is reshaping the look of shopping centres across the globe with the design of the Gold Coast’s Robina Town Centre recently recognised as being among the best in the world – capping off a stellar awards month for the project’s architects.

The Buchan Group’s work on the Robina Town Centre was initially lauded late last year by the International Council of Shopping Centres (ICSC), when it won a Gold Design Award in the Design and Development category at the ICSC Asia Pacific Shopping Centre Awards.

Now the project has again been acknowledged by the ICSC as an ‘Honoree’ in the same category at its annual VIVA “Best-of-the-Best” Awards held in Las Vegas in May.

The ICSC VIVA Best-of-the-Best Awards honour and recognise the most outstanding examples of shopping centre design and development, sustainability, marketing, and community service worldwide.

The international award tops off a strong month for the firm, with The Buchan Group-designed five-star Hilton Surfers Paradise named Australia’s best tourism and leisure development at the 2013 Property Council of Australia (PCA)/Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards.

The Buchan Group Managing Director Greg Sheehan said the ICSC recognition was testament to the hard work and vision of the project design team.

“With the Robina Town Centre, we were appointed by owner QIC Global Real Estate to deliver an accessible and modern retail centre that embraced innovative design and sustainable principles,” he said.

“The criteria for the ICSC Awards consider many different elements, from the quality and innovation of the design concept and land use, to the financial performance of the centre, and the quality of the internal and external finishes.

“The ICSC ‘Honoree’ Award rounds out a very positive month for us, with Hilton Surfers Paradise taking out a national PCA award and two of our New Zealand retail projects also coming home with national industry awards.”

The Robina Town Centre project was previously awarded the 2011 Property Council of Australia (QLD) Excellence in Design Award, 2010 Property Council of Australia Retail Property of the Year Award, and 2009 Property Council of Australia (QLD) Retail Property of the Year.

The Buchan Group’s excellence in urban retail design has also been recognised in New Zealand, with the iconic Re:START shopping precinct in Christchurch taking out a New Zealand Institute of Architects award in the Planning and Urban Design category.

The Buchan Group’s work on Barrington retail centre in Christchurch has also been honoured with a Merit Award, this time by the Property Council of New Zealand’s annual industry awards.
