2011 Civic Trust Awards – Winners Announced Celebrating Architectural Excellence And Rewarding Civic Contribution

Civic Trust Award Winners 2011

From 333 national and international entries, 57 projects have been recognised by the prestigious Civic Trust Awards at a ceremony held at the People’s History Museum in Manchester. Awards were presented to the best new build, conservation, restoration and public realm by Civic Trust Awards Patron, architect and TV presenter George Clarke.

In total, 27 Awards were given, including 7 projects that were chosen to receive a Special Award, demonstrating outstanding credentials in a specific area.

Norwich Cathedral Visitors Centre (above) by Michael Hopkins of Hopkins Architects picked up the ‘Michel Middleton Special Award’, a memorial to the former Civic Trust Director given to a restoration project or new build within a conservation area.

The new inner city destination Stonebridge Hillside Hub in Brent (above) by Edward Cullinan Architects received the ‘Special Award for Community Impact and Engagement’. This is presented to a scheme that has demonstrated how successful community buy-in can help deliver the highest standards of design whilst meeting the needs of local people.

The West Centre in Glasgow (above) by Anderson Bell Christie which has brought together local health, social and voluntary services for the children, young people and families of West Glasgow, was awarded the ‘Special Award for Inclusive Design’, sponsored by the National Register of Access Consultants (NRAC).

The fiercely contested ‘Special Award for Scotland’ went to the refurbishment of Glasgow’s old fish market The Briggait (above) by Wasps Studios/Nicoll Russell Studios.The Special Award for Scotland is supported by Glasgow City Council and The City of Edinburgh Council – the partnership approach adopted by these Authorities for the second year continues to set a benchmark for the Awards by promoting and recognising some of the excellent projects being designed and constructed. Successful entries from all regions of Scotland were eligible to win the Special Award and The Briggait was unanimously selected by the Civic Trust Awards National Panel as the winning recipient.

The Special Award for Restoration & Refurbishment was given to the Grade ‘A’ listed McManus Galleries in Dundee (above), judged to be sympathetic to its environment whilst providing a quality and innovative solution.

The Special Award for Sustainability went to the stunning addition to the V&A Museum in South Kensington, Medieval & Renaissance Galleries (above) by MUMA.

The Civic Trust Awards National Panel selected the visitor centre at Tyne Cot Cemetery in Zonnebeke, Belgium (above) by Govaert & Vanhoutte Architectenburo as their favourite Award winner in 2011.

Civic Trust Awards Managing Director, Malcolm Hankey said “increased financial pressures on all aspects of the industry have once again dominated the last 12 months, but the Civic Trust Awards continue to encourage design excellence and promote the concept of positive civic contribution. 333 projects were submitted for consideration, including some intriguing international entries, three of which were presented with an Award. I would like to congratulate all of this year’s winners on their much deserved success.”

In addition to the 27 Awards, 24 projects received a Commendation and 6 schemes presented with a Community Recognition for providing a positive social, cultural, environmental or economic benefit to the local community.

Civic Trust Award 2011

Civic Trust Award 2011 for the Darwin Centre

The Darwin Centre at the Natural History Museum in London, designed by C. F. Møller Architects, has been announced winner of the prestigious 2011 Civic Trust Award.

The Civic Trust Awards scheme was established in 1959 to recognise the very best in architecture, design, planning, landscape and public art. Awards are given to projects of the highest quality design, but only if they are judged to have made a positive cultural, social or economic contribution to the local community.

The jury commented on the awarding of the Darwin Centre: “This stunning modern building is an important new addition to The Natural History Museum, bringing people closer than ever before to the important scientific work it carries out by revealing the scientists at work. The contemporary extension offers visitors greater insight into the full spectrum of the museum’s activities.

The ‘Cocoon’ at the centre of the design is a beautiful and mysterious object, captured within a spacious glass atrium and the Angela Marmont Centre for UK Biodiversity and the Attenborough Studio inspire a new generation of scientists with their amazingly energetic and helpful staff. The new Darwin Centre makes an enormously positive and extremely elegant contribution to communities far beyond South Kensington, and is a fitting building to inspire scientists of every age.”
