Contract magazine to honor Michael Graves with 2013 Legend Award

Michael Graves Legend Award

(New York, NY – January, 2013) On January 25th, fantastic architectural interiors will be honored, a Designer of the Year will be named, and Michael Graves, FAIA, will be recognized with the Legend Award at the 34th Annual Interiors Awards presented by Contract.

The who’s who of the design world will gather at Cipriani 42nd Street to celebrate the Interiors Awards. Contract—the leading magazine for commercial architecture and interior design—will recognize projects worldwide in 13 market segments. Contract Editor in Chief John Czarnecki, Assoc. AIA, will emcee the event and will present the 2013 Legend Award to Graves—the first Designer of the Year (1981) to also receive the Legend distinction.

Since 1980, the Interiors Awards has recognized the exceptional projects and accomplishments of well-known firms and emerging talent who push the boundaries of architecture and design. For the 2013 edition, a panel of design industry leaders selected one winner in each of 13 categories ranging from large and small offices to public space and adaptive reuse.

The 2013 jurors were: Stephen Apking, FAIA, interior design partner, SOM; Dina Griffin, AIA, IIDA, NOMA, president and partner, Interactive Design, Inc.; Nancy Keatinge, president and partner, Felderman Keatinge + Associates; Alan Ricks, cofounder, MASS Design Group; and Margaret Sullivan, director of interior design, H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture. Winners will be revealed at the January 25th breakfast and awards presentation.

“We will be honoring the most innovative interiors, projects that are of the moment and located worldwide from Austria to China,” says Czarnecki, who selects the Designer of the Year and names the Legend Award winner in consultation with the Contract editorial staff and publisher John Rouse. “The Designer of the Year—to be revealed at the Breakfast—is a person who is highly respected in the profession, and whose work will resonate with the audience of architects and designers.”

Contract will present Michael Graves with the 2013 Legend Award—the Interiors Awards program’s highest honor for lifetime achievement—for his rich and diverse contributions to the field of design. With his architecture, interiors, and planning practice, Michael Graves & Associates, he has been turning out richly colored Beaux Arts–inspired houses, hotels, libraries, museums, and civic buildings both here and abroad, earning him an AIA Gold Medal in 2001. He has also developed an entirely separate product design empire—the Michael Graves Design Group. His prolific success includes more than 2,000 products for Target over the past 15 years, and the whistling-bird teapot for Alessi, which has sold more than one million units since its introduction in 1985. This year, his influential career will come full circle, as the only designer to win both the Designer of the Year Award and the Legend Award.

Video presentations to be shown at the Interiors Awards Breakfast about all of the winners—including lengthy videos about the Designer of the Year and Michael Graves as the Legend Award honoree—have been produced by Thirst / A Design Collaborative, led by Rick Valicenti, the 2011 National Design Award winner for Communication Design.

The 34th Annual Interiors Awards Breakfast will be at Cipriani 42nd Street on January 25, 2013. The event will begin with a networking reception at 7:30am followed by the much anticipated awards presentation at 8:30am. Ticket prices are $235 for individual tickets, $2,350 for a table of ten and $3,900 for a Champion Table of ten.
