Michiko Sumi Unit 17 Michiko's work has a quality that is both Oriental and Western. She uses pens and pencils with a subtlety that is rarely seen. The main tactic of her work is to deal with the invisible palimpsests of human occupation and existence. Her site is Robben Island, off the coast of Cape Town, where Nelson Mandela and many other political prisoners where incarcerated for decades. Michiko weaves a series of drawings that suggest architectural enclosure but ultimately are explorations of the materiality of the island and the astounding beauty that can be found even in the most inhospitable terrains.
