WXY architecture + urban design

WXY architecture and urban design (formerly Weisz + Yoes) is an award-winning multi-disciplinary practice specializing in the realization of innovative architectural and environmental work in challenging contexts. WXY is celebrated for its agility, designing critically acclaimed visitor centers, schools and parks as well as private projects. Their in-depth responses to all aspects of program, site and technical requirements result in inventive solutions, creating objects and spaces that enrich their clients' experiences of the places they inhabit. WXY excel in relating architecture, civic infrastructure and public open space to the intimacy of individuals and to the grander presence of the urban landscape.

The firm is noted for its focus on community and sustainable planning, incorporating new technologies and green design. Their studies of new materials and digitally driven production inform their search for unique structural and spatial resolutions to every aspect of design vocabulary. The effective process involves gathering the right team to understand and meet the needs of multiple clients and stakeholders. The firm's expertise in coordinating and solving complex design problems has been critical to their successful re-imagining of the quiet streets and dramatic new public spaces of cities.

A client base includes public authorities, not-for-profit organizations and institutions, large and small companies, and individuals. The firm is pre-qualified as one of 24 firms in the DDC Design Excellence program and is a NYC-and NYS-certified Women-Owned Business Enterprise. WXY's work has been exhibited and published widely including in The New York Times and Architectural Record.

WXY has just completed the new NYC & Co. Official New York City Information Center, a radical redesign that dramatically reshapes the way NYC visitors and residents navigate the five boroughs. Currently the firm is working on waterfront parks in both Greenpoint and Williamsburg, Brooklyn; a brownfield remediation site in the Bronx; a garage and salt shed for the Department of Sanitation in Manhattan; an ambulance station in the Bronx; a school for individuals with autism spectrum disorders in New Jersey; and a dramatic new plaza for Cooper Square and Astor Place, an intricate New York public space where multiple axes including Broadway and Fourth Avenue converge.

With a Young Architects Award in 1998 the firm went on to receive several distinctions from the AIA and ASLA for the Battery Bosque and the Bronx Charter School for the Arts among others. In 2006 the firm received the Chrysler/House Beautiful Innovative Designer Award in Architecture; a New York Designs Award from the Architecture League; and a top Honor Award from the Waterfront Center. In 2008 they received an AIA NYS Award of Merit for Kowsky Plaza. WXY was a finalist in the international competitions to design the New York Aquarium, FIAO Cultural Center, the Center for Architecture, and a new Sculpture Center in Long Island City. The firm was also official runner-up in the PORT team for the international competition to revitalize Toronto's Central Waterfront.
