Jean-Michel Wilmotte, architect, town-planner, interior architect and designer, founded his agency, Wilmotte & Associés, in 1975. Today, with a team of 135 people, the firm’s activities range from industrial design to architectural projects to town planning, furthering his concept of “interior architecture for cities.”

Wilmotte is perhaps best known for his work with I.M. Pei on the Grand Louvre in Paris, designing interiors for the new spaces located beneath Pei’s iconic pyramid. His museum work also includes the renovation of Lyon’s Museum of Fine Arts (1991-1998), restructuring Lisbon’s Chiado National Museum after it was devastated by fire in 1994, and designing the Pavillon des Sessions rooms dedicated to the Primitive Arts in the Louvre in Paris. He was principal architect on the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, which opened in Beijing, China in 2007. He is currently working on the restoration of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, due to re-open in 2009.

Wilmotte has received numerous prestigious awards for his work, including being inducted into the French Légion d’Honneur as a Chevalier, as well as the honour of being named a Commandeur des Arts et Lettres, Chevalier des Palmes Académiques and Ambassador for Peace of UNESCO.

In 2005, he launched the Wilmotte Foundation to encourage European architectural culture and link architecture, the preservation of heritage and contemporary design. It also helps gifted young architects at the start of their careers, teaching the importance of history’s impact on the future.
