Near:Far, Teeple Architects. Ed. Maurizio Vitta, l'Arca Edizioni, 2007. "Stephen Teeple stands out among architects today for his attention to craft and detail. The architect's fingerprints are there, discernible through his precise choice of material, joinery, color, and texture. Craftsmanship made corporeal [ ] - allowing the architecture to impressionistically speak of the larger reality of the human hand in the making process. Idealization of details is a first principle or fundamental premise of Teeple's work; it is part of a continuation of the tradition of artifact-making, evocative of the connection between the inquisitive mind and the collective hand. Along with his attention to detail, Teeple's Scarpa-esque articulation of materiality often brings a palpable beauty to the work - reminding us that the intrinsic nature of the physical material is the generative source of the work. Like a sculptor, he works the materials directly and intimately revealing his commitment to an authenticity in the material qualities that more broadly points to the importance of an authenticity in all architecture." Thom Mayne / Morphosis "Near refers to a desire to connect each design with the critical issues that underlie its creation. Those issues include the many factors that link form to its conditions of being - such as the nature and opportunities of the site; an awareness of the activities housed within each project; the opportunities for social engagement that each project presents; issues of tectonic form and strategic organization; as well as the composition of material, space, textures, and light that make connections with a given place. We would go so far to say that is a fundamental humanism inherent in respecting these connections. Doing so engages architecture with the world it serves. Far is a simultaneous but opposing tendency - an ongoing desire to achieve critical distance from the immediate reality of these conditions, to bring them into question. As our work developed over time, we began to realize more and more that although these relationships must be respected, they lack in themselves the engaging qualities that draw people to a work of design. Our most recent projects have shown themselves to be progressively a work unto its own imaginative construct, still related to the problems and conditions upon which it is founded, but separated as an entity unto itself - an invention inspired by these condition, but not derived directly from them. We believe that people are drawn to ideas, that each of us responds to the inventiveness of a thought or design as seen in relation to the conditions that brought it into being. The existence of this link is critical. The relevance of an inventive solution is intensified as one perceives this link back to its originating conditions. It is this relationship between the constructed idea and its origins that we find to be the intellectually and emotionally engaging aspect of architecture. To experience architecture is to witness its unraveling; to see before oneself the exposure of the constructed idea and to understand the conditions for its presence."
