ARCHITECT RICARDO LEGORRETA ANNOUNCED AMONGST WINNERS OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST ARTS PRIZE
Ricardo Legorreta was today honoured along with four other internationally-acclaimed artists as recipients of the 2011 Praemium Imperiale, one of the world’s most prestigious arts prizes.

The 2011 award winners are:
Dame Judi Dench (Theatre/film), one of Britain’s most respected theatre, TV and film actors; Bombay-born British sculptor Anish Kapoor (Sculpture) who has won international acclaim for his work and is now creating the Orbit sculpture for the London 2012 Olympics; Bill Viola (Painting), a pioneer of video art whose work is described as ‘moving paintings’; Ricardo Legorreta (Architecture), Mexico’s leading living architect whose design blends modernism with his country’s own tradition and culture; and Seiji Ozawa (Music), Japan’s most celebrated conductor, who was Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for 29 years.

Cathedral of Managua, Nicaragua

The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Managua, (Spanish: Catedral Metropolitana de la Inmaculada Concepción de María), referred to as the New Cathedral (La Nueva Catedral), was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Maria.
Construction began in 1991 in substitution of the Old Cathedral of Managua or Cathedral of Santiago. The old cathedral building was damaged and thought to be unrestoreable after a 1972 earthquake that destroyed 90% of the city.

He was influenced by celebrated Mexican architect Luis Barragan.

Ricardo Legorreta Vilchis (May 7, 1931 – December 30, 2011) was a Mexican architect. He was a prolific designer of private houses, public buildings and master plans in Mexico, the United States and some other countries.
The Mexican architect was awarded the prestigious UIA Gold Medal in 1999, the AIA Gold Medal in 2000, and the Praemium Imperiale in 2011.
Ricardo studied architecture at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, from where he graduated in 1953. After working for five years with José Villagrán García, he established his own office in 1963.
Legorreta was a disciple of Luis Barragán and carried Barragan’s ideas to a wider realm.
Barragan, in the 1940s and 1950s amalgamated tradition and the modern movement in architecture yet his work is mostly limited to domestic architecture.
Legorreta applied elements of Barragan’s architecture in his work including bright colors, play of light and shadow, and solid Platonic geometric shapes.
One of the important contributions of Legorreta has been the use of these elements in other building types such as hotels, factories as well as in commercial and educational buildings.
His most famous works are the Camino Real Hotel in Mexico City, the IBM Factory in Guadalajara and the Cathedral of Managua.
