Born and raised in Tennessee, Stout has demonstrated his unique combination of architectural vision and environmental activism in a variety of building types, ranging from museums and corporate headquarters to aquatic centers, power stations, firehouses, and other industrial structures in the United States and Europe. Inspired by early experiences in passive solar research and development, Stout has worked assiduously to use architecture as a means to advocate environmental responsibility. A LEED® accredited professional, he has served on the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on the Environment and the California Council Sustainability Task Force. Committed to his role as an educator, Stout has taught and lectured at numerous schools and universities including Cornell University, University of Tennessee, UCLA, University of Southern California, and the University of Texas at Austin. Most recently he served as the E. Fay Jones Chair of Architecture at the University of Arkansas. He often lectures at conferences and professional summits across the country and is a member of the GSA Design Excellence Peer Program. Stout’s projects have received numerous design and sustainability awards and honors. In 2003, the Steinhüde Sea Recreational Facility in Germany received the American Institute of Architects’ “Top Ten Green” Award. Other honors include numerous awards from regional American Institute of Architects chapters and two American Architecture Awards present by the Chicago Athenaeum. The Taubman Museum was awarded an American Architecture Award in 2007. Stout himself was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows in 2003. The Taubman Museum of Art is Stout’s first completed freestanding museum commission. Previously, Stout designed the addition for the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, Tennessee which opened in 2005. He has also worked with museums across the country including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Baltimore Museum of Art on comprehensive master planning, programming, and facility evaluations. Among the firm’s many current cultural and educational commissions are the Art Gallery of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta); University of Alabama at Birmingham Institute for the Visual Arts (Birmingham, Alabama); the San Juan College Creative Arts Center (Farmington, New Mexico); and the Dockweiler State Beach Youth Center (Los Angeles, California). Additional commissions include those for the Holocaust Museum Houston (Houston, Texas) and the New Mexico Museum of Art (Santa Fe, New Mexico). RSA projects have been highlighted in numerous international publications, and are featured in the firm’s first monograph, Environmental Alchemy: Randall Stout Architect published by Edizioni Press.
