Professor Andy MacMillan OBE FRIAS 1928-2014

Professor Andy MacMillan OBE FRIAS has died, reports the RIAS today:

“It is with very great sadness that the Royal Incorporation notifies its members and friends of the death of Professor Andrew (Andy) MacMillan.

Andy MacMillan

Andy died suddenly on Saturday 16th August in Inverness, during this year’s RIAS Andrew Doolan Awards visits, which he was chairing. RIAS President, Iain Connelly, also one of the Awards judges, commented,

“Andy was a great architect, an educator of international renown and one of the finest human beings it has been my privilege to know. His influence on generations of students at the Mackintosh School of Architecture and in the many other institutions where he taught, was immense.

Andy’s contribution to Scotland was among the most significant of any architect in the post World War II era. He will be remembered as someone who lived life to the full, who inspired all those he taught and all those who encountered him, as an individual of enormous talent, tremendous enthusiasm and irrepressible fun. Andy’s legacy is the hugely improved built environment of Scotland wrought by his own hand and those of successive generations of his students. He will forever be missed.”

Andy’s wife has indicated that his family are planning a private funeral but that a celebration event will be announced shortly (and notified to the Incorporation’s members and friends). She has also requested that, rather than give flowers, those who wish to mark Andy’s memory should give to the restoration fund for St Bride’s Church, East Kilbride (we will also supply details on how to donate in the celebration notice).

Andy is survived by his wife Angela, their three daughters, their son and three grandchildren.

Andy MacMillan

Andy MacMillan – “A gentleman, a scholar” and much much more whose contribution to architecture and education in the U.K. has been immense.

I was fortunate to be a part time tutor at “the Mac” and under his strong and perceptive leadership it was a good place to be. – There was pride -There was purpose and at that time I doubt if there was a better School. Never self serving Andy was a thoughtful, generous critic and mentor encouraging and motivating those in his charge.

In Scotland he has always held a special place at the heart of the profession and leaves a truly significant legacy in the wonderful Gillespie Kidd and Coia buildings with Isi and in the substantial achievements of his students worldwide. To many of us he was a father figure and friend with a warm generous spirit, a zest for life and a lively sense of humour.
I thank him for the encouragement given over the years.
