The design for this Malaysian-Singaporean joint venture actively engages the space of the surrounding city to form a new civic nucleus in Singapore’s modern metropolis. The two towers are not conceived as autonomous objects, but defined by the spaces they create around them.

Singapore consistently ranks as one of Asia’s most livable cities. However, it is increasingly dominated by isolated individual towers that favor exclusion over social connectivity. The prescribed zoning confronts the project with a dual dilemma: it splits the site into two separate pieces, and leaves large, bulky footprints for the resulting tower envelopes which risk overpowering the surroundings and the intimate scale of the adjacent historic Kampong Glam district.

Archipelago Cinema by Ole Scheeren : Collateral Event of the 13th International Architecture Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia

Archipelago Cinema, a floating auditorium designed by architect Ole Scheeren, will form part of the official selection of collateral events in the 13th International Architecture Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia. An evocative outdoor theatre located within the old harbour basin Darsena Grande of the Arsenale, Venice’s historic shipyard, the modular raft will act as a mobile stage for public events, including the world premiere of the film Against All Rules.
Against All Rules, a documentary essay produced by acclaimed filmmaker and architecture specialist Horst Brandenburg, presents profound insight into the work and philosophy of German-born and Beijing-based architect Ole Scheeren. Spanning a period of more than six years, the film follows the breath-taking construction of one of the most iconic buildings of recent times, the CCTV Headquarters in Beijing and the role of its lead architect Ole Scheeren – an unparalleled adventure in the world of architecture and construction.
The film ventures further to reveal the architect’s life and work beyond creating one of the largest buildings ever built. A wide range of other ground-breaking projects in Beijing, Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur represent new prototypes in response to the complexity and growing challenges of a global and dramatically shifting world. As Horst Brandenburg states: “Ole Scheeren has come to stand for what architects have to fulfill beyond primary function: a promise, an aim, a dream, or a vision of the future at the beginning of the 21st century”.
Following the Venice premiere, Archipelago Cinema is set to embark on a journey around the globe, providing an itinerant platform for architectural discourse and film screenings, while Against All Rules will further feature at a series of international film festivals.

Horst Brandenburg has produced over sixty documentaries and two hundred short films featuring architects such as: Norman Foster, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid or Herzog & de Meuron and artists including Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke and Chuck Close.
About Ole Scheeren
German-born and Beijing-based Ole Scheeren is principal of Buro Ole Scheeren and an internationally celebrated architect and visiting professor at Hong Kong University. He is working on a series of projects, including Angkasa Raya in central Kuala Lumpur, a large-scale urban development in Singapore, a studio/gallery for a Beijing-based artist and the new headquarters for Guardian Auction in Beijing. Prior to founding Buro Ole Scheeren, he was partner and director of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, and responsible for the office’s work across Asia.
He successfully led the design and realization of the China Central Television Station CCTV and the Television Cultural Centre TVCC in Beijing. Internationally acclaimed architect Ole Scheeren unveils designs for landmark tower in Kuala Lumpur. Ole Scheeren, the architect behind one of the most iconic buildings of the 21st century, the CCTV headquarters in Beijing, today revealed his design for a new landmark tower in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The 268 meter tall tower, Angkasa Raya, was unveiled today at an official ceremony in the capital, and will stand as a symbol of Malaysia’s diverse and multi-cultural society.

Ole Scheeren, former Partner along with Rem Koolhaas at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) and Director of OMA Asia, announces the opening of his architecture studio, Büro Ole Scheeren.

Widely known for leading the groundbreaking design and construction of one of the world’s largest and most iconic buildings, the China Central Television Station (CCTV) and the Television Cultural Centre (TVCC) in Beijing, Scheeren has extensive experience on architectural projects of varying scale in multiple cultures and contexts. His work spans from the Prada epicentre stores in New York and Los Angeles, to the large-scale residential complex of The Interlace in Singapore and the Taipei Performing Arts Centre in Taiwan.

Ole Scheeren has established his studio in Beijing and Hong Kong together with long-time collaborator Eric Chang. In addition, he holds the position of Visiting Professor at Hong Kong University. In choosing China as the firm’s headquarters, Büro Ole Scheeren demonstrates its commitment to Asia and the region’s acute significance in the worlds of architecture and design. As part of its international operations, Büro Ole Scheeren is establishing a further base in London.

Scheeren’s new practice will continue to exemplify his ability to work at extreme scales. Current projects range from city-defining structures to small, intimate buildings and include a 250 meter tall tower in the centre of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; an 800,000 square meter mixed use project in Chongqing, China; and a studio/gallery building for a Beijing-based artist. Furthermore, the firm has been invited to compete for a 2000 seat theatre near Beijing.

OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture) and Ole Scheeren announced that Ole Scheeren will be leaving the firm in order to establish his own studio.
During his time at OMA, Scheeren has led several of the firm’s projects, including the design and construction of CCTV and TVCC in Beijing, the Prada Epicenters in New York and Los Angeles, the MahaNakhon tower in Bangkok and the Interlace in Singapore.Rem Koolhaas commented: “Ole has played a significant role in the development of the office and has successfully led the realization of the CCTV project. After 15 years of collaboration, we have now decided to work independently. I am personally looking forward to furthering OMA’s activities in Asia.”
Ole Scheeren, who has accepted a post as Visiting Professor at Hong Kong University, added: “My collaboration with Rem Koolhaas and OMA has been an extraordinary experience – we have generated some remarkable projects both in East Asia and North America. The time has now come for me to pursue new opportunities, and I am very excited about this next phase of my work.”
By streamlining OMA’s Beijing operations, expanding its Hong Kong office, and placing both offices under the leadership of David Gianotten, general manager of OMA Asia, OMA believes it will be well positioned to offer its clients across Asia a strong and diversified portfolio of services. Born in 1971 in Karlsruhe, Germany, Ole Scheeren is an internationally acclaimed architect and partner along with Rem Koolhaas in the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA).
He was director of OMA Rotterdam and OMA Beijing and in charge of the firm’s work across Asia. As partner-in-charge of OMA’s largest project to date, he led the design and construction of the China Central Television Station (CCTV) and the Television Cultural Center (TVCC) in Beijing. His current projects include MahaNakhon, a 300-meter tower in Bangkok; The Interlace and The Scotts Tower, two residential developments in Singapore; a media center in Shanghai; the Taipei Performing Arts Centre in Taiwan; the conceptual plan study for the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong; and a recently-won competition to build a new city center for Shenzhen in southern China.
Since 1999 he has directed OMA’s work for Prada and completed the Prada Epicenters in New York City (2001) and Los Angeles (2004). In 2006, he designed two exhibitions – one for The Museum of Modern Art in New York and another for Beijing – featuring the CCTV project.

German-born Ole Scheeren is principal of this architectural office and an internationally celebrated architect and visiting professor at Hong Kong University. Educated at the universities of Karlsruhe and Lausanne, he graduated from the Architectural Association in London and was awarded the RIBA Silver Medal.
At Buro-OS, Ole Scheeren is currently working on a series of projects, including Angkasa Raya, a 268 meter tall landmark building in the center of Kuala Lumpur; a studio/gallery building for a Beijing-based artist; and a large-scale urban development in Singapore. His investigation and exploration of new prototypes for architecture at various scales also includes the development of a new kind of kinetic performing art space/arena, as well as an 800,000 square meter mixed-use development in Chongqing. Furthermore, he is working on the design for an arts center in Beijing and a contemporary art museum in central China.

The architect has contributed to various arts and culture projects and exhibitions throughout his career, including the International Highrise Award, Milan Triennale, China Design Now in London, Cities on the Move at London’s Hayward Gallery and in the city of Bangkok, Media City Seoul and the Rotterdam Film Festival. In 2006 he designed two exhibitions for the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Beijing featuring the CCTV project. He regularly lectures at various international institutions and conferences and serves on juries for awards and competitions.
Eric Chang
Partner, Buro Ole Scheeren
Eric Chang is Partner at Buro Ole Scheeren and has been collaborating on the design and management of numerous projects with Ole Scheeren over the past decade. Chang is an American with a Bachelor in Philosophy and Fine Arts and received his Master of Architecture from Yale University in 1995.
At Buro-OS, Eric Chang manages the operations of many of the ongoing projects, including Angkasa Raya, a 268 meter tall landmark building in the center of Kuala Lumpur; a large-scale urban development in Singapore, as well as an art center in Beijing and a contemporary art museum in central China. Previous projects with Ole Scheeren at OMA include Mahanakhon, The Interlace, The Scotts Tower, the Beijing Books Building, as well as the Prada Epicenters in New York (2001) and Los Angeles (2004).
After completing his master’s degree, Eric Chang joined Gluckman Mayner Architects in New York where he worked on the design of the Mori Arts Center in Tokyo, the Helmut Lang and Yves Saint Laurent boutiques in New York, as well as the Light Projects for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, and Peacekeeper’s Memorial at the UN headquarters in New York. Between 2004 and 2010, Eric Chang was an Associate at OMA and General Manager of OMA’s Beijing office.
