About the Studio:
NaJa & deOstos is a London-based architectural studio that has been developed as a platform for experimental architecture using narrative techniques formed by Nannette Jackowski and Ricardo de Ostos.
They are the authors of The Hanging Cemetery of Baghdad (SpringerWienNewYork, 2007) and Pamphlet Architecture 29: Ambiguous Spaces (Princeton Architectural Press, 2008). Their projects have been exhibited at the 6th International Architecture Biennale in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2005; the Summer Exhibition 2006 at the Royal Academy of Arts in London; and the London Festival of Architecture 2008. They are design tutors of an undergraduate unit at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London.
Their work is largely engaged in ambiguous situations within urban and social dynamics for which the studio explores alternative narrative-like scripts. By infusing architecture with more explicitly literary references and structures, NaJa & deOstos develop projects that are imaginative and experimental but tangible and real at the same time.
The design research encompasses programmatic narratives as alternatives or cultural exploration to large infrastructural works. Leading an undergraduate design unit at the Architectural Association in London they have explored themes such as urban farms and manufacturing communities.
Amid a contemporary fascination for techniques and their commercialization, NaJa & deOstos develop an interdisciplinary architectural language, built or un-built, that stimulates a constant questioning of our roles as creators and consumers in an irresolute and often contradictory discipline.
