J. MAYER H. Architects – Exhibition Building News

Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, Germany

English text (scroll down for German):

SCHAUSTELLE
Space for Experiments

Designed by J. MAYER H., the ‘Schaustelle’ or ‘show site’ will be a temporary pavilion and platform for the four collections housed at the Pinakothek der Moderne.

Munich, July 2012 – In an official statement, Dr. Markus Michalke, Chairman of the Pinakothek der Moderne Foundation announced:

The Pinakothek der Moderne is due to close in February 2013 for renovation work and is expected to reopen again in September 2013. The temporary closure has been seen as an opportunity that will give rise to a makeshift exhibition building – the Schaustelle. Set up for the duration of the renovations, it will provide the four collections at the Pinakothek der Moderne with a lively platform to hold exhibitions, workshops, talks, performances, film screenings and video installations and much more besides. The scheme has been initiated by the Pinakothek der Moderne Foundation.

The ground floor of the Schaustelle contains a large exhibition space that can be easily adapted to suit the requirements of the various exhibitions of the four collections. The plans foresee the use of the open scaffold structure in the outdoor area as a projection area, making it available as an addition exhibition space. The scaffold structure allows visitors to walk through it, while they catch new glimpses of the city beyond, set off by works on display from the collections.

Accompanying events, including some at night, multimedia projections in the outdoor area and a viewing platform overlooking the city centre: all these things will cast the Kunstareal in a new and exciting light. The Pinakothek der Moderne Foundation and the four institutions in the Pinakothek der Moderne are also using the temporary platform to send a political signal to push for the completion of the second section of the main building. The Schaustelle is an operational platform and think tank in one.

SCHAUSTELLE
Raum für Experimente

Die “Schaustelle” von J. MAYER H. wird Provisorium und Plattform der vier Sammlungen der Pinakothek der Moderne.

Auszug aus der Ankündigung, München, 12. Juli 2012:

Bauabschnitts voranzutreiben. “Die Schaustelle ist operative Plattform und Thing Tank in einem.” so Stiftungsratsvorsitzender Dr. Markus Michalke.

The Street” is modelled on an exhibition that appeared in the Venice Biennale in 1980, in which Paolo Portoghesi invited 20 architects that he considered to be taking new and innovative directions in contemporary architecture. All participants were asked to design a full-scale architectural façade, as well as organize a small exhibition of their work to be exhibited in the space directly behind the façade.

tip.top – German Design Loft
Curated by Juergen Mayer H.
Presented at Hong Kong Business of Design Week

English text:
“Products that are “made in Germany” and high-quality German workmanship are famous the world over as great export items. The presentation at German Design Loft hinges on the idea of highlighting the quality of these exhibits by focusing on the details of the finishing. For example, the objects lie on their sides or the wrong way up – on raised pedestals, printed with inverted graphics of building ground plans, enlarged to a scale of about 1-in-2.

This new perspective offers a view “behind” things and also familiarizes visitors with the renowned products in a different context. The inverted depiction of the ground plans of standard apartments taken from the “Neufert” reference manual references architects’ design work and thus represents the idealized “standard apartment” for the furnishings. Likewise, these ground plans playfully reference the exhibits, which are presented the wrong way round or the wrong way up. A wraparound carpet section unites the pedestals with the exhibits to create a single spatial presence.”

German Exhibition in the Centro Cultural São Paulo
Exhibition Design by J. MAYER H.

Excerpt from the press release:
“The exhibition architecture designed by J. MAYER H. explores the subject of presenting architecture in a novel manner. The mobile and changeable exhibition sculptures engage with each other in a fascinating dialogue. At the same time, the sculptures integrate presentations of various works by select architects and engineers.

Since the order in which the sculptures are set up within the exhibition area available is deliberately left open, the exhibitors are given a « space for opportunity » allowing for flexible adaptation to unforeseen demands on utilisation or changing locations. The exhibition’s changeability opens up intriguing constellations. It invites the visitor to think over the conventions of customary presentation of architecture in a static context and to explore new ways of presenting an exhibition.”

Black and White

Dupli.Casa shown in the Black and White Exhibition

Location: Museum fuer Gestaltung Zuerich, Zuerich, Switzerland
Opening Ceremony: 8 Nov 2011, 7 pm, Galerie
Exhibition Date: 9 Nov 2011 – 4 Mar 2012

Excerpt from the press release:
“Black and white polarize and are seen as radical and particularly expressive. The two colours are shaped by contrasts such as light and darkness or life and death. Common to both is a claim to absoluteness but also the expression of demarcation or distance, as well as protest. The ways in which they are used relate to specific cultural circles and are illustrated in various social phenomena. In architecture, design and fashion black and white generally stand for values such as abstraction, elegance and timelessness, but beyond this understanding there opens up an entire cosmos of motifs and cultural traditions.

Thus design in black and white interprets this cultural spectrum or reformulates it. With its rich contrasts this exhibition explores the design potential of the outermost extremes in the spectrum of colours. Following an introduction to the cultural and social meaning the spotlight is turned on the idea, application and effect of black and white in architecture, design and fashion of modernism and the present day.”

Book Release – Metropol Parasol

English text (scroll down for German text):

With Metropol Parasol, J. MAYER H. Architects have created a new landmark for the city of Seville. The design by the architectural office received first prize in the competition for the redevelopment of the Plaza de la Encarnación at the center of the medieval district of the capital of Andalusia. Metropol Parasol has the potential to turn the Plaza into a new, contemporary urban center in a quarter that was long neglected.

The building complex, with its large, parasol-like structures, contains a museum featuring archeological finds in the basement; an indoor market on the ground floor; an elevated square for events, bars, restaurants; and a panoramic walkway on the roof of the parasol. The multifunctional Metropol Parasol signals an initial step in the dynamic development of cultural and commercial facilities at the heart of Seville.

ARTE, 20 Mar 2011 – Excerpt from the Arte TV announcement:

“The buildings of architect Jürgen Mayer H. are true eye-catchers – sculptural and spectacular. This segment by Claudius Gehr provides a glimpse into the architect’s methods and introduces various examples of his work: the student canteen in Karlsruhe, an extension of the science park for children in Nordborg, Denmark and ‘Metropol Parasol’, the redevelopment of the Plaza de la Encarnacion in Seville, Spain.

German architect Jürgen Mayer H. is constantly shifting the boundaries of architecture. Each of Jürgen Mayer H.’s buildings shares a fundamental concept: the separation of floor, wall and ceiling appears to have been lifted, everything blends into everything else. Another unusual aspect is the mix of materials.

The ‘Metropol Parasol’ in Seville, his largest building to date, is made of polyurethane-coated timber. Some 3000 individual pieces were custom made for this gigantic, walk-in sculpture, all of them specially transported from Bavaria to Seville. This particular building, which houses an indoor market, a restaurant and an architectural museum, is due to be inaugurated by a member of the Spanish Royal Family in the spring of 2011.”
