The University of London, in partnership with University Partnership Programmes (UPP), has reached financial close on a £105M deal to house over 500 students in a new 33-storey building in Stratford.

This is one of twenty outstanding buildings selected for the Wood Awards 2016 shortlist, featuring some of Britain’s best architectural designs in wood.

The shortlist will be showcased at 100% Design on 21-24 Sep at London Olympia. The winners will be revealed at the 45th annual Wood Awards ceremony at Carpenters’ Hall on 22 Nov.

Stephen Hodder – RIBA President

Stephen Hodder to be next President of the RIBA

Stephen Hodder has been confirmed as the next President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Stephen will become President Elect on 1 September 2012 and will take over the two-year elected presidency from Angela Brady on 1 September 2013.

Stephen will be the 75th RIBA President, a position previously held by significant architects Sir G. Gilbert Scott and Sir Basil Spence among others.

Stephen Hodder MBE is director of Hodder + Partners, an award-winning architecture practice based in Manchester. Hodder + Partners has won over thirty major awards including the most important prize in architecture: the inaugural RIBA Stirling Prize in 1996 for the Centenary Building at the University of Salford. Stephen is currently RIBA Vice-President for Nations and Regions and Design Review Panel member for both CABE and Places Matter! He has written and lectured widely, been visiting examiner at a number of schools of architecture and assessor of numerous architectural competitions and awards.

I am particularly keen that we do more to promote the importance of collaboration between client, design and delivery teams – an essential partnership that can lead to more successful architecture. Even faced with challenging times, we can achieve so much.”

Stephen Hodder – News

Stephen Hodder is due to be appointed the next RIBA president, without an election, if no other candidates submit before 5pm.

Stephen Hodder was educated at the School of Architecture, University of Manchester, and following university joined Building Design Partnership (now BDP).

Stephen Hodder has been in practice since 1983 and in 1992 formed Hodder Associates. In 1996 Hodder Associates received the most important award in British Architecture for a single building, the inaugural Stirling Prize for Architecture for the Centenary Building, University of Salford.

Stephen Hodder was awarded an MBE in 1998.

Great Marlborough Street Tower

Planning permission has been secured for a new, 33-storey residential tower in Great Marlborough Street, Manchester. The £45m scheme is being developed and operated by new entrant to the market, Student Castle.

The 520-bed development will be the second tallest building in Manchester after the Beetham Tower.

Manchester Architects

Stephen Hodder has been in practice since 1983. He formed formed Hodder Associates in 1992. The design practice has realised significant projects in the leisure, cultural, residential, and commercial sectors, together with the higher education sector.

In 1996 Hodder Associates received the most important award in British Architecture for a single building, the inaugural Stirling Prize for Architecture for the Centenary Building, University of Salford. The architecture practice has won over thirty major awards, the most recent being an RIBA Award for St Catherine’s College Phase II in 2006.

Professionally, Stephen Hodder has been President of the Manchester Society of Architects, RIBA Northwest Region Chairman, a member of the RIBA Awards committee, and RFAC Design Review panel. Stephen currently chairs the Professional Advisory Board at the Manchester School of Architecture. Stephen is a national member of the RIBA’s governing Council and its Vice President Membership.

Stephen Hodder was awarded an MBE for services to architecture in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, 1998.
