Westbourne Grove building
The distinctive public toilet and florist building on ‘Turquoise Island’ was designed by Piers Gough of CZWG. The programme is inspirational - flower shop + toilets - a lovely, functional intent for a slim triangle of public space. In 1993, horrified at the thought of a ‘Portaloo’ on their local traffic island, the residents of Westbourne Grove commissioned architect Piers Gough to design something more elegant. The result was Turquoise Island. At one end are the lavatories, a landmark for cabbies and tourists alike, while the other end is host to the flower shop.
incl. Florists + attendant’s kiosks – adding life + security
£190k
Life-affirming: the best of what Postmodernism tried to deliver ie colour, fun and a break away from following the International Style masters. Along with CZWG’s China Wharf the injection of colour was welcome. What happened to CZWG after these inspirational projects? well since I wrote this they have come back into form with intriguing Maggie's Nottingham and the beguiling Bling Bling building in Liverpool.

CZWG Architects - Background
Piers Gough, born 1946, is a famous UK architect, formerly partner in firm of Campbell, Zogolovich, Wilkinson and Gough (now CZWG)
Post-modern buildings in London's Docklands made Piers Gough's name:-
Cascades Apartment Tower on the Isle of Dogs (1988)
Housing (The Owl) Bermondsey
Piers Gough designed the Lutyens exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, London (1981-2) and a yellow-coloured block on South Bank of Thames in London, which forms a partial spiral in plan [photo top of this page].
Piers Gough designed a controversial skyscraper development proposed for the former Endeavour garage site on Preston Road, Brighton. The project has been branded "phallic egocentricism" due to its unusual, organic tower design.
Piers Gough was advisor to Frank Gehry on the King Alfred site in Hove, England and was also working on Brighton Marina, England.
