Westbourne Grove building
The distinctive public toilet and florist building on ‘Turquoise Island’ was designed by Piers Gough of CZWG. The programme is inspirational – flower shop + toilets – a lovely, functional intent for a slim triangle of public space. In 1993, horrified at the thought of a ‘Portaloo’ on their local traffic island, the residents of Westbourne Grove commissioned architect Piers Gough to design something more elegant. The result was Turquoise Island. At one end are the lavatories, a landmark for cabbies and tourists alike, while the other end is host to the flower shop.
incl. Florists + attendant’s kiosks – adding life + security
£190k
Life-affirming: the best of what Postmodernism tried to deliver ie colour, fun and a break away from following the International Style masters. Along with CZWG’s China Wharf the injection of colour was welcome. What happened to CZWG after these inspirational projects? well since I wrote this they have come back into form with intriguing Maggie’s Nottingham and the beguiling Bling Bling building in Liverpool.
