The Tower 185 ensemble is made up of two main components: the perimeter block and the tower itself. The style of the perimeter block takes its cue from the urban framework of this European city and forms the layout at street level. The levels, materials and colours of the neighbouring buildings - beige stone walls and slate roofs - have been reflected in the new development. At the start of 2010 the museum was closed so that fundamental refurbishment and restructuring work could be carried out. And now the first, most spectacular part of the museum is ready for the public. Frankfurt-based architect Christoph Mäckler and his team have provided us with a striking new design for the Augustiner Museum which does justice to a modern museum, a contemporary presentation. The sculptures hall in particular conveys an impression of the exciting link between architecture and the sacred art of past centuries. The rooms offer visitors surprising views: balconies, galleries, walkways, recesses and windows enable visitors to approach the works of art from totally different perspectives, turning the visit into an experience. The first phase of the work began in 2006 by architectural practice of Prof. Christoph Mäckler. The Augustinermuseum is one of the most important museums on the Upper Rhine and contains one of the richest collections of artistic and cultural artefacts from this region. The importance of this collection can only be compared with those in Basel and the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar. Christoph Mäckler founded his own architectural practice in Frankfurt am Main in 1981, which since his appointment as professor at Dortmund University of Technology in 1998 has been operating under the name of Prof. Christoph Mäckler Architekten.

Christoph Mäckler Architekten pursues a policy of integrating structures into their urban context – “apt architecture”. In doing so, the built environment, made up of private living spaces and public open spaces, is regarded as “urban architecture”.

Christoph Mäckler’s architecture is distinguished by its reconciliation of tradition and modernity. Prof. Mäckler seeks to reconnect architecture with its premodern roots. The restoration of surface and volume in the facade and the understanding of the building’s material properties play a pivotal role in his work.
