Aberdeen Music Hall Building, Scotland, UK - Renewal Architects: BDP  photograph from architects Aberdeen Music Hall Building - 4 Apr 2013 BDP was chosen from a shortlist of five architectural practices by Aberdeen Performing Arts (APA) to develop design proposals for this Category A-listed building. The project will make this much loved concert hall more flexible, accessible, attractive and sustainable, providing greater audience comfort and improved facilities for performers. The revitalised Music Hall will play an important role in Aberdeen's vision to be a vibrant, creative and ambitious city with a strong cultural identity, a centre of artistic excellence and a cultural tourism destination. Cardiff and Vale College, Wales, UK  image from architects Cardiff and Vale College - 4 Mar 2013 BDP has won the competition to design the 16,000 sqm Cardiff City Centre Community Campus for Cardiff and Vale College. The college is one of the largest in Wales serving Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan and this project brings together many of its activities onto a single campus in the heart of the city. Ebbw Vale Learning Zone, south Wales Design: BDP  photo © Sanna Fisher-Payne Ebbw Vale Learning Zone - 14 Dec 2012 This building provides post-16 vocational and academic learning. The building lies at the heart of the regeneration of the former steelworks site, the largest regeneration project in Wales, and occupies a key location close to the existing town centre. Shanxi Broadcast & TV Centre, China  building image from BDP BDP : Shanxi Broadcast & TV Centre - 12 Dec 2012 BDP has been commissioned by the Shanxi Broadcast & TV Channel to design its new Broadcast & TV Centre. This highly significant, provincial level, public sector project is located in Taiyuan, the capital city of Shanxi Province in north China. The development will form one of the focal points of the emerging Jinyang Lake Commercial District, and will play a critical part in the urban expansion of south Taiyuan. Jumeirah College, Dubai, UAE  image from architect BDP : Jumeirah College - 8 Nov 2012 The architects have been commissioned for the relocation of a prestigious primary and secondary school in Jumeirah. The building relocation will provide additional facilities for 2,300 students. The new building has already started on site and will be a showcase school for the charitable organisation GEMS Education. 10 Oct 2012 BDP Wins Design Competition In Düsseldorf, Germany BDP has won the Düsseldorf Ulmer Höh design competition to redevelop a former prison site in Germany. BDP’s Dutch studio was up against five German practices for the 15 hectare mixed use urban redevelopment project. The site is contained within a city block and incorporates mature trees and historical buildings. BDP will use these qualities to transform the enclave into a lively city neighbourhood. The existing city block structures are repeated along the site’s perimeter, seamlessly connecting the new quarter with the city. Inside the perimeter blocks, where the prison complex stood, a green oasis will be created from which all the new homes will benefit. It will be a very special open green space within an otherwise densely built-up area. Of the huge prison complex, only the chapel building will be retained. It will be converted into a community centre and become a meeting place for the new residential quarter. The jury was impressed with the way the imprint of the prison was incorporated into the design of the public realm. According to its report, BDP’s design puts quality and atmosphere above commercial efficiency. 25 Aug 2012 Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy, Fife, east Scotland  photo © David Barbour Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy The new wing at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, Fife is now open. The 500 bed extension to the existing hospital was delivered by Balfour Beatty for NHS Fife through a Public Private Partnership. The facility contains eleven operating theatres and a new A+E department as well as offering a range of other services including maternity, paediatric, renal and critical care. 9 Aug 2012 BDP Announce Three Project Wins in China 9 August 2012 - BDP has announced three project wins in China at the UK Trade & Investment Infrastructure Summit in London, the flagship opening event of the British Business Embassy. The conference brings together top global decision-makers, with around 200 business leaders, policy makers and investors from around the world, to provide a unique opportunity to address how British businesses pursue global growth and partnerships. Nanjing Road ; XJTL University Suzhou ; Artall Tiancheng Business Centre:    images : BDP The British Business Embassy helps showcase global business partnerships along with the best of what the UK has to offer in some of our most successful, high growth industries such as fashion, architecture, technology, life sciences, advanced engineering, automotive and aerospace. Nanjing Road, Shanghai After winning an international competition, BDP has been appointed to design a world class new destination in the Huangpu District of the East Nanjing Road in Shanghai. This sits within the Bund Historical and Cultural Conservation Zone, and features clusters of historic buildings which will be renovated to include high-end retail, food and beverage, leisure, a luxury club and a boutique hotel. Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University, Suzhou This new international university is run in partnership between the University of Liverpool and Xi'an Jiaotong University. BDP is appointed to masterplan a large-scale campus to provide world-class teaching, laboratory and research facilities, and design the humanity building, science building and training centre, and international exchange centre. Artall Tiancheng Business Centre, Nanjing The 32,000 sq m project will maximise the public spaces in the centre, link existing buildings with covered walkways and create a 26 floor tower. The tower will provide office space that will sit above an art gallery. A key driver in the design for business centre is the natural and climatic assets of the site and location and how these are optimised for passive and active sustainable design solutions. Trade and Investment Minister Lord Green said: “I warmly congratulate BDP on winning a series of new architectural and urban design and masterplan contracts. BDP’s successes are an excellent reflection of the strength of British companies in providing the expertise needed to deliver major infrastructure projects around the world.” "With the world's spotlight on the UK this summer, we are working hard through the British Business Embassy programme to help companies capitalise on the unique opportunity we have in 2012 to secure new contracts and investments, such as those won by BDP." 29 Jun 2012 BDP Elects David Cash As New Chairman David Cash has been elected as the new Chairman of international architectural, engineering and design firm, BDP and takes up the role from 1 July.  photo © Sanna Fisher-Payne David began his BDP career in Preston in 1980 and has been a company director for 22 years. He was Chair of BDP’s northern studios for 14 years, and in 2008 when international expansion became a central element to the firm’s development plan, he became the Director for International Development. David has been instrumental in increasing BDP’s presence worldwide, developing studios in India, China and the UAE. David will continue to develop BDP internationally and remain Chair of the MENA region. He said of his appointment: “My role as Chairman will be to give direction to the firm for the next few years. As a company we always to need to be improving and evolving in these changing times, rather than be afraid of change we need to embrace it. If I can take BDP from being a UK-based company that does projects overseas to a world-based organisation, I would feel like I had made my mark.” David takes over the role from Tony McGuirk who chaired BDP for six years. Tony developed the ethos of ‘Creating Places for People’ which created the platform for BDP’s re-emergence as a major design force. Other appointments at BDP Heather Wells has been appointed group finance director taking over from John Parker who previously held the position. She will now form part of the firm’s Executive together with BDP’s chairman and chief executive. Chris Harding is BDP’s new Chair of the architectural profession. Chris has been with the firm for over 20 years and worked on some of the BDP's best known projects including the Channel Tunnel, St Peters Campus for the University of Sunderland, the Millennium Building for the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Bournemouth Public Library and several leading research centres for the University of Cambridge. Architect Scott Mackenzie, based in the Glasgow studio, has been appointed head of the education sector. He is currently working on new build facilities for both Inverness and Kilmarnock Colleges and the University of Strathclyde’s Technology Innovation Centre. He is also project director for the Robert Gordon University Garthdee Campus. Scott joined BDP in 1999, has been a director since 2006 and a company director since 2011. Steve Merridew has been appointed BDP’s new head of sustainability. Steve, recently named one of Building Magazine’s Top 50 Rising Sustainability Stars, joined BDP in 2008 and has a strong background in low energy design, masterplanning and infrastructure. Essex Business School, England - 15 May 2012 BDP Architects  picture from BDP Architects The Essex Business School at the University of Essex’s Colchester Campus has received unanimous planning consent for a new three-storey 5,550 sq m higher education research and training building. The Planners’ Report states “In terms of the overall design and architectural standard it is considered that the proposed scheme represents an innovative and, importantly, sustainable approach that is considered to be wholly appropriate within this context…..It is considered that the proposed building would add considerably to the overall innovative architectural standard achieved within the University campus and could become another key building on the site, in its own right.“ The Business School is the largest faculty in the University and the current accommodation which has reached full capacity is scattered across six separate buildings. The new school will bring the faculty under one roof with sufficient floorspace to allow it to develop into one of the premier business schools in Europe. These facilities will not only allow the Business School to expand, but will also be available to other faculties within the University, and will attract businesses and other organisations to engage with the students and staff members. The architectural character of the new Business School aims to create an exemplar of zero carbon approach as part of the School’s ethos to lead the development of sustainable business strategies.. BDP Project Architect Keith Watson said “It has been designed to be visibly sustainable at every level, from its orientation on site, choice of structure and materials, landscaping and passive engineering strategies.” A winter garden acts as a buffer zone, supporting the passive ventilation and heating strategy of the teaching building, whilst also being the arrival and meeting space showcasing the green and social character of the new School. The Business School gables wrap into the winter garden and at each end house social functions - café at the east end, and staff and post graduate social spaces at the west end. The building, which BDP is designing on an interdisciplinary basis, is due for completion in December 2013. Hongqiao Central Business District, Shanghai, China  picture from BDP Architects Hongqiao Central Business District - 14 May 2012 BDP has won an international competition to design a new business district in a key strategic transportation location in Shanghai. The Hongqiao business district, for client Golden Kingdom, will comprise 350,000 sq m of office, retail and landscape within close proximity to Shanghai’s main railway station and its main domestic airport. Pavilions Arena Plymouth, Devon, UK  picture from BDP Architects BDP : Pavilions Arena Plymouth - 3 May 2012 BDP design proposals for the £83m Pavilions Arena redevelopment have been approved by Plymouth City Council, paving the way for a planning application to be made by Akkeron Leisure, the appointed preferred developer. The scheme by BDP for the Pavilions site provides an extended and refurbished arena and also re-structures the site to provide a gateway from the city centre into the Millbay and Stonehouse areas of Plymouth via a new boulevard running to the north of the site. Kuwait Cultural Centre  picture from BDP Architects BDP : Kuwait Cultural Centre - 12 Mar 2012 BDP has been appointed by the Public Authority of Housing Welfare (PAHW) to design a Cultural Centre within the arid sands of the Kuwaiti desert. The new centre will lie at the heart of Sabah Al Ahmad, a major new city, and will provide state-of-the-art facilities and an inspirational home for a wide range of cultural activities. BDP - Recent DesignsRoyal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, south east England picture from architects Royal Sussex County Hospital - 31 Jan 2012 Brighton and Hove City Council has announced that it is minded to grant planning permission for the redevelopment of the Royal Sussex County Hospital site. This has been the largest and most complex application that BDP’s planning team, headed by Tessa O’Neill, has undertaken. Stevenage Town Centre, Hertfordshire, England  image from BDP Stevenage Town Centre - 26 Jan 2012 This £250m scheme aims to re-establish Stevenage Town Centre as a major retail, business and leisure destination. Proposals include new shops and restaurants, offices, a public transport interchange, a magistrates’ court, a hotel, and up to 120 new homes. Significant improvements will also be made to the town centre’s public realm and parking provision. BDP is again top in Western Europe BDP has again come top – by fee income - of the Western Europe chart of the WA100 2012 survey of the world’s largest architecture practices, a position the practice has held for over 10 consecutive years. The UK is still the firm’s largest market but China and India are growing substantially and for the practice, many of its key projects are to be found in Asia, including: the masterplanning of a sustainable city of 160,000 people in Hua’an China; two masterplans in Kerala, India; one for the Indian Institute of Technology in Mandi; and one in Suzhou, China. Peter Drummond, BDP’s Chief Executive said “These are the most extraordinary times that we have experienced at any time in our 50 year history. There is an enormous contrast in dealing with economic uncertainty and lower investment in social infrastructure in the west with massive investment in markets such as India and China. But we believe that our distinctive humanistic approach to architecture and placemaking creates a strong position for BDP in both circumstances.” BDP’s Shanghai studio moves to larger premises As part of a long term strategy for continuing to work in China and accommodate a larger design team BDP has moved into larger premises, still in Shanghai.  image from BDP Architects BDP has been involved in China since 2007 and opened a studio at the end of 2010 to support this work and win further projects across the sectors. Since then, the practice has successfully won a number of major developments ranging from urban regeneration masterplans through higher education, cultural and leisure facilities to retail and housing right across China including Beijing, Foshan, Hangzhou, Lanzhou, Nanjing, Shanghai and Suzhou. The project will be BDP’s tallest building at 28 storeys and it will be the first building to be completed on the Olympic Park post games in 2014. The scheme known as ‘New Front’ has been given the go ahead by Leeds City Council. İzmir Masterplan, Turkey  image from architects İzmir Masterplan - 29 nov 2011 BDP has revealed details for a major new project on the outskirts of Izmir, Turkey’s third largest city, for Turkish developer Megapol. BDP has produced the masterplan and concept design for the Vaha Project which creates a new shopping and leisure destination for the region. Essex Business School, Colchester, University of Essex, England  image from BDP, architects Essex Business School - 24 Nov 2011 BDP’s interdisciplinary team has been selected to design the £14m Essex Business School at the University of Essex’s Colchester Campus. The new building will be zero-carbon as part of the school’s ethos to lead the development of sustainable business strategies. Therefore, as a simple response to the sloping site, the school has been designed to be visibly sustainable at every level, from its orientation on site, choice of structure and materials, landscaping and passive engineering strategies. Hua’An County City Masterplan, China  building image from BDP Hua’An County City Masterplan - 14 Jul 2011 BDP has been awarded the prestigious Hua’An County City Masterplan covering an area of 15 square kilometres. Hua’An County is a World Heritage Site and National Forest area of outstanding natural beauty in Southern Fujian Province. BDP - Appointment Architect Scott Mackenzie has been appointed to BDP’s board of directors. BDP are asking people to nominate their favourite BDP project on their Placebook blog. The blog encourages people to discuss, vote on, and nominate their favourite BDP buildings and projects. Placebook started out as a simple idea to introduce current BDP designers to the history and diversity of work over the first 50 years. Such was the reaction to the idea, BDP have opened it up to former colleagues, friends, clients, contractors, journalists or anyone who may ever have enjoyed spending time in one of their buildings. Salmiya district is an existing urbanised area on the Gulf Coast of approximately 20 sq km. Growing congestion, pressures for redevelopment and a recognition of the existing poor quality of place have led the Kuwait Municipality to commission this work which will set in place the infrastructure, planning and design guidelines to enable the transformation of the district over the next 15 years. BDP has been challenged to create a sustainable masterplan for Salmiya district to keep it car-friendly, but also flexible for future growth. This will include more strategic siting of any new public works such as schools, universities and hospitals in relation to residential zones, plans for improved public transport provision, and better all-round pedestrian access to Salmiya’s shops and civic amenities. In addition the BDP-led Salmiya masterplan will work in harmony with the third Kuwait masterplan known as 3KMP. The 3KMP is an umbrella development strategy for the whole of Kuwait which is designed to help cope with the intensive economic and population growth anticipated in the region over the next 20 years. Francis Glare, BDP’s head of urbanism said “We would like to acknowledge the importance of the collaboration with our local consultants OBD and their contribution to the winning of this project. We believe this will be a growing area of work for us, as a new place-making approach starts to be applied to first generation Middle Eastern cities. The BDP approach is particularly relevant to the cities and societies of the Middle East as they move on from North American driven models of city planning dominated by traffic engineering.” 3 Feb 2011 Remembering Jo Statement from Keith Pavey, Head of BDP’s Bristol Studio “It is now over seven weeks since Jo was so tragically taken from us and it is still difficult to come to terms with her untimely and unnecessary death. We have been overwhelmed by the many messages of condolence and sympathy we have received from our clients and colleagues in the construction industry. We are certain that there will be many lasting tributes to Jo from many directions but for our part at BDP we have concluded that we will progress the following: • The creation of a small garden of remembrance at our Bristol studio. • The sponsorship of an annual Landscape Design prize in Jo’s memory for students at the University of Gloucestershire School of Landscape and Environment. • The creation of a Book of Remembrance to include an anthology of Jo’s work. • The dedication to Jo of a cycle ride between BDP offices, planned to take place in late spring as one of several events to mark BDP’s 50th anniversary, with the proceeds from sponsorship going to charities of Jo’s parents’ and Greg’s(Reardon, Jo’s boyfriend) choice. We will not forget Jo and we hope the above will collectively become a lasting tribute to her.” 11 Oct 2010 BCO Awards BDP won twice at this year’s British Council for Offices Awards in London. The fit-out for PricewaterhouseCoopers at 141 Bothwell Street, Glasgow was national winner of the Fit-out of Workplace Award, and West Lothian Civic Centre, Livingston was winner of the National Innovation Award. Presented by actor and trained designer Ronni Ancona, the awards are considered to be one of the most prestigious events in the corporate real estate calendar attracting over 1,000 key players in the office industry sector. Of the PwC project the judges said: “This year’s national winner of the Fit-out of Workplace Award is a quality fit-out that betrays no signs of opulence or financial exuberance and outstanding value for money. Fundamental to any successful fit-out is the new environment’s ability to contribute to the well-being and productivity of the workforce. It was clear to the judges that BDP’s fit-out fully met these criteria. PwCs’ fit-out illustrates a keen understanding of its corporate and staff needs and displays its sophistication as a client. The accurate delivery of the client’s brief by the professional team has brought the entire project together.” Awarding West Lothian Civic Centre the National Innovation Award, the judges said: “This new home for public sector services in West Lothian accomplishes two significant achievements: providing an impressive and aesthetically pleasing building that betrays none of the traditional dourness or conformity of the customary public sector edifice, and innovatively combining a number of hitherto separate public services in one dynamic modern and efficient building.” All entries are considered automatically for the Innovation Award as part of the assessment process with the regional judges nominating entries from their region to be put forward.
