Atelier Kempe Thill News Wintercircus Transformation, Ghent, Belgium picture from architect Wintercircus Transformation - 17 Jan 2013 Architects Atelier Kempe Thill has won the invited international competition for the transformation of Wintercircus Mahy in Ghent. The building that served as a circus building until the early 20th century will be transformed into a meeting-point and hotspot for creation and innovation. In this case, urban renewal means, above all, radically demolishing large-scale, honeycombed housing blocks and replacing them with differentiated, smallscale block development and terraced housing. The ground floor level is designed as a flat sandwich-space, which opens up completely to the surroundings thanks to the glazing on all sides. The public green with its dominated tree canopy becomes part of the interior and generously extends the small space to the outside. De Harmonie, Antwerp, Belgium 2010- image from Atelier Kempe Thill De Harmonie Antwerp Atelier Kempe Thill won the invited international competition for the transformation of Antwerp’s former 19th century concert hall “De Harmonie” into a “space of silence”. The building will be used as a non-religious contemplative centre for celebrations of important moments in life and individual reflection. The building will be carefully restored to bring back the historic glory of the house. Missing historical building parts and ornaments will be replaced by new elements in a contemporary interpretation.
