International real estate firm Harwood International broke ground on its latest development with Rolex. This addition to HI’s vast portfolio of developments and its three master planned communities underlines the importance of the Company’s long-term growth strategy. The Rolex Building will open winter 2016, becoming the ninth development in the 18-city block master-planned district of HARWOOD.

“We built the first office building in Uptown, and after 30 years, Rolex and Harwood International are partnering once again to build another addition in our district,” said Gabriel Barbier-Mueller, founder and CEO, Harwood International. “This development will set a new standard for work life in the U.S. We intend on creating an office that will feature a unique blend of innovative architecture and gardens that Dallas has never seen before.”
The Rolex Building is being designed in collaboration with Dallas-based HDF, LLC and Tokyo-based Kengo Kuma & Associates. This iconic seven-story building features 136,857 square feet, including 56,422 square feet of office spaces. Curated environments designed by world-renowned landscape architect Sadafumi Uchiyama include a Japanese inspired tiered garden featuring rampart stone walls at the base of the building with reflecting pools and cascading waterfalls spilling over the sides. A motor court is nestled within gardens and pedestrian friendly sidewalks which tie the site to the gardens of Saint Ann Court and across to the existing Rolex building.
“Environment is an essential concept for the modern experience, incorporating both natural and urban surroundings,” said Kengo Kuma. “I wanted to design a building in Dallas with Harwood International that fuses nature and architecture. This landscape-building idea applied to The Rolex Building will result in a beautiful urban-organic icon that will fundamentally change the Dallas cityscape.”
Kuma holds a Ph.D. in Architecture and has won the Architectural Institute of Japan Award and was made an Officier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France. Notable projects include the Suntory Museum of Art in Tokyo, Bamboo Wall House in China, LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy) Group’s Japan headquarters, Besançon Art Center in France, and one of the largest spas in the Caribbean for Mandarin Oriental Dellis Cay.
“Dallas is known for its award-winning architecture but there are no buildings to date in the City designed by a Japanese architect,” said Barbier-Mueller.
The original building will be named One HARWOOD, signifying the first development in the history of Harwood International. This attractive building has been a Dallas landmark since its doors opened in 1984 as Uptown Dallas’ first office building. Rolex is expanding its offices from two floors of the original building to its owner-use build to-suit.
“We not only build to last, but we build relationships that are long-term,” said Barbier-Mueller. “Many companies within our district have grown with us, including Frost Bank and Polsinelli.”
