KlingStubbins wins honorable mention in national design competition
Moore Square competition distinguishes firm from nearly 100 applicants
Raleigh , NC – October 26, 2009 – KlingStubbins earned an honorable
mention in the city of Raleigh’s first public national design competition.
The Moore Square Design Competition received approximately 100 applicants,
each offering five images and 300 words describing their vision for
the public space.

The four-acre park currently hosts more than 30% of Raleigh’s public
events and will draw roughly 200,000 people in 2009. But the space
was not designed as a large event venue, and the increases in usage
and maintenance have posed serious issues for the square.

KlingStubbins’ proposed design to renovate Moore Square sought to
recognize the park as a point of convergence by extending key pathways
to form active spaces within the park and fortify the linkage of venues
that surround it. The openness of the park is also emphasized to allow
for a wide range of activities, including farmers’ markets, festivals,
and outdoor movies, providing vast, open spaces for dynamic interaction
as well as more intimate spaces for rest and repose. By building upon
the connective ability of Moore Square, the design is intended to
enhance the impact of the surrounding context while provoking thoughtful
future development for the city of Raleigh.
