SYSKA HENNESSY GROUP DESIGNING SYSTEMS FOR
HIGH-RISE ADDITION TO MARICOPA COUNTY COURT COMPLEX

PHOENIX, AZ -- Syska Hennessy Group has been awarded a contract to design the building systems for a high-rise tower addition to the Maricopa County criminal justice complex for in Phoenix, Arizona.

As one of the fastest growing areas in the nation, Maricopa County is faced with an increase in criminal justice proceedings and needs to expand its existing court complex with the addition of a state-of-the-art high-rise tower. When completed in 2011, the 17-story building will be approximately 660,000 to 675,000 square feet, providing 32 additional courtrooms, secure judicial chambers, office areas and support spaces with several additional secured spaces designed to serve the entire complex.
Working with the architects, Gould Evans of Phoenix, Syska Hennessy Group is providing engineering services that include developing high-performance design solutions to support the building desired by the county. The scope of work includes design of all mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems as well as vertical transportation. The project requires systems capable of supporting high-tech security and office equipment while remaining flexible enough to accommodate programmatic changes necessary to complete the court complex master plan and future expansions.

The mechanical design includes floor-by-floor air handing units for improved system performance and indoor air quality. Connection to a local district chilled water system eliminates refrigerant-based chillers and cooling towers. The plumbing design eliminates energy-wasteful domestic hot water storage tanks by utilizing semi-instantaneous water heaters, along with ultra-low flow plumbing fixtures. Sustainability options under consideration include solar photovoltaic (PV) on the roof, shading devices, heat recovery and lighting controls.

A program analysis and facility assessment was completed by team members prior to commencing schematic design. The process was necessary to ensure that the design could accommodate the mechanical, electrical and plumbing infrastructure required for a facility of this size, as well as the entire court complex.
