The AIA Healthcare Awards program showcases the best of healthcare building design as well as health design-oriented research. According to the AIA, winning projects exhibit conceptual strengths that solve aesthetic, civic, urban and social concerns as well as the requisite functional and sustainability concerns of a hospital.

Recipients were selected in five different categories with Legacy ER taking one of two coveted spots in Category A for built projects with total construction cost less than 25 million dollars.

AIA Healthcare Design Award Juror comments:
“This architectural response to a straightforward planning solution is an exciting vision of how good design represents the intent of a building. The result is a fresh and innovative solution to freestanding urgent care centers and emergency rooms. Angular forms identify this facility as an important place without intimidating patrons. The use of light to define the forms makes most unique and delightful. Overall, the interior design is very clean and good use of colors, translucency, and natural light. The exterior design is exceptional, very sculptural and the staff amenity spaces are extraordinary. The strong design concept is consistently implemented at all levels, creating a highly visible branded object within the suburban surroundings.

“We are honored by the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health’s recognition,” said Yen Ong, 5G Partner. “The project was conceptualized as a reflection of Legacy ER’s organizational identity and sought to give form to an emerging model of freestanding emergency medical care facilities.”

Legacy ER

Legacy ER operates a hybrid program offering urgent and 24/7 state-licensed emergency care services within a freestanding building. Conceptualized as a potent reflection of the organization’s identity, the architecture captured the duality of the emergency medical professionals’ character, projecting outwardly the knowledge, skill, precision, decisiveness necessary for the competent practice of emergency medicine and expressing inwardly the gently, empathetic and humanistic qualities of the persons beneath the robe, realized simply through montaging sharply folded exterior robe of zinc and softly sculpted interior plastered planes. Points of admission of natural daylight and views create apertures that elucidate intersecting tectonic moments.

This is the second facility by 5G Studio for Legacy ER. The first , located in Frisco, Texas opened in August 2008 . The success of the first buildings design convinced the client to push forward with an edgy contemporary design to advance the discourse on the design of healing environments.

“We hope the project would contribute to and challenge the stereotypical notion of healthcare architecture as being a subset of practice that’s too heavily burdened by technical requirements.” Said Yen Ong “ To the contrary, we would advocate the idea that it be an agent of positive environmental transformation within the community it entered.”
