This house is the first of a pair of houses designed for two different clients but on immediately adjacent lots. Having become familiar with my previous work each client approached me expecting similar results. The challenge for me then was satisfy the desires of my clients without making the pair of houses seem like a compound or one very large house. I was in the process of designing this house when I received the commission to design its neighbor, known herein as Glendora II.

This house is the more formal of the pair in that it is organized about a central, interior axis that culminates in a long swimming pool and wall of limestone.
While the axis serves to organize the spaces they are placed asymmetrically about the spine. This strategy combines a classic, symmetrical planning approach with a Modern, asymmetrical disposition of elements.

Layering and the composition of planes was very important to me in the design of this house. The façade is composed of three primary planes: weathered steel, limestone and stucco. One’s path through the weathered steel wall is terminated asymmetrically by the two-story stucco plane that leads to a secondary plane of stained wood that contains the hardware-less front door to the house.

Interior spaces are defined by full-height, frameless, translucent glass panels. The spaces seem to move around and through these planes of light creating a sense of expanse and wonder.

Shortly after this house was completed it was acquired by an internationally known art collector. I enlarged the house for him and his family by approximately 50%. Some images of the expanded house are shown below.
