Arthouse is an eight apartment condominium in a four-over-four arrangement with owner and guest parking on grade but beneath the apartments. We designed this building to read as a single entity rather that a composite of residential forms that is the common practice in this type project.
One enters the building via a covered path that leads to the lobby with its adjoining garden. An elevator takes guests and owners to a central, two-story volume that is lit from above and bridged across to afford access to the apartments. The top-lit volume is totally unexpected as no hint of the element may be seen from the exterior. In addition to a surprise it is a great luxury in projects such as this where space is the truest luxury.
The second floor apartments enjoy recessed and/or projected terraces while the third floor apartments are arranged about individual atria. The interior spaces of these upper apartments radiate from their atria thus bringing natural light to most of the apartment. Spaces not directly associated with the atria are typically sky lit so that essentially all spaces receive natural light.
Windows, skylights and borrowed lights in both clear and translucent glass are used to infuse the project with daylight and promote a connection to the outdoors.
The base of the building is rendered in burnished concrete block and concrete while the upper stories are white stucco with clear-anodized framing.
