The house was designed to engage the landscape and immerse the occupants in the full range of environments that the site offers. What the completed house doesn't show is its modest beginnings: this is a renovation of a 1950's house which had a series of unsympathetic additions from the 60's and 70's, and whose owners originally wanted only a kitchen upgrade. West Lake Hills Residence, Austin, Texas Design: Specht Harpman  photo: Taggart Sorensen West Lake Hills Residence - 23 May 2013 On a densely tree-covered site in the Austin, Texas exurb of West Lake Hills, Specht Harpman was tasked with the renovation and expansion of a modest 1970's house. Much of the original internal structure was maintained, but the alterations sought to erase all visible traces of the original house. David grew up in Arizona so the Tucson Mountain Retreat and living in the desert are like a homecoming for him. The tectonic mechanisms responsible for the landscape, where mountain ranges seem to slide past each other, is emulated by massive parallel walls of the house. Wilkinson Residence, Oregon 2004 Design: Robert Oshatz, Architect  photo : Cameron Neilson Oregon Residence - added 6 Feb 2013 The Wilkinson House by Robert Oshatz, completed in 2004, is an example of modern architecture at peace with its site. The house occupies a wooded Pacific Northwest site, on a steep slope which allows the main level of the house to sit among the tree canopy. The Seattle Houseboat and Float Home community is unique: the residents share access and live in close proximity to one another, yet there is a community diversity that is unrivalled.
